WESTERN STATE WOMEN 74, CHADRON STATE 64

GUNNISON, Colo. – Chadron State guard Dallas Shaw sank seven 3-pointers en route to scoring a career-high 23 points and teammate Kattie Ranta recorded her sixth double-double of the season, but it was not enough as Western State won 74-64 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s game here Friday night.

Freshman guard Desiree Smith led the winning Mountaineers with 20 points while teammates Jade McIntosh and Charmayne Bellamy each scored 14 points.

McIntosh also grabbed 10 rebounds while Bellamy was four of seven from 3-point range.

Western State led 31-27 at halftime. Chadron State took its only lead at 36-33 early in the second half, but the Mountaineers went on a 17-3 run to take the lead for keeps.

Shaw’s seven treys ties her with all-time great Tricia Lukawski for second on the Eagles’ all-time single-game list. Lukawski also hit eight 3-pointers during her senior season in 1992-93.

A sophomore from Buffalo, Wyo., Shaw took 15 shots from behind the arc, also second on the Eagles’ all-time list.

Ranta contributed 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Hattie Guzman added 12 points and Kate Simontonnine, but the remainder of the Eagles combined for only seven points.

CSC played without its only senior, Sadie Waugh, because of sternum injury.

Chadron State shot 37.2 percent from the field and Western State 39.1 percent, but the Mountaineers took 21 more (64-43) field goal shots, partially because the Mountaineers had 12 turnovers and the Eagles had 21. In addition, the hosts grabbed 17 offensive rebounds that they converted into 16 points.

The Eagles were 23-36 from the free throw line. Western was 19-27.

Western State is now 2-18 for the season and 2-14 in the RMAC. CSC is 3-17 and 3-13. The Eagles will play at Colorado Mesa on Saturday night.

WESTERN STATE MEN 81, CSC 66

GUNNISON, Colo.—Junior point guard Joseph Charles scored 24 points and had five rebounds, seven assists and four steals while leading Western State to an 81-66 victory in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Friday night.

The Mountaineers shot 58 percent (30-52) from the field while breaking a seven-game losing streak. Center Charles Joseph added 14 points and another guard, Terrance Boyd, scored 13.

Although the Eagles sank eight of 20 3-point shots, they made only 35.7 percent (20-56) of their total shots from the field.

Junior swingman Zac Bargen continued to lead the Eagles. He scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to share game-high honors. Kendrick Holliman added 12 points for CSC.

Western State, which led 42-37 at halftime and maintained the lead the rest of the way, is now 8-12 for the season and 7-9 in the conference. The Eagles are 2-18 and 2-14.

The Sidney Red Raiders took the Lady Cardinals down to the wire and Chadron squeaked by 45-42 on Friday night in Sidney, while the Red Raiders Boys beat Chadron, 60-36.

The Lady Cardinals struggled at times against Sidney, although some key players were in foul trouble and saw limited playing time.  Ashlea Kerr did not play due to an injured knee; Maggie Earney was not able to come off the bench tonight due to her injured hamstring.

The Red Raiders came out hot to lead 13-9 after the first quarter.  By halftime, Sidney was holding on for a two point lead, 19-17.  After halftime, Chadron would go on a little run, making the score 36-27 by the end of the third quarter.  The Lady Red Raiders would make it very interesting in the fourth quarter coming up just short.  Chadron won, 45-42.

Chadron was led in scoring with a double double by Bailea Kerr who had 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Briley Hannaford would help out with 12 points.  Sarah Mahr scored 21 for Sidney in the loss.

Sidney got out to a fast start, outscoring Chadron by 11 points, 13-2.  At the break, Sidney led, 28-10.  At the end of the third quarter the Red Raiders extended their lead to 19 for a score of 43-24.  The final score was 60-36.

It was all Sidney in Friday night’s game as the Red Raiders made 11 three pointers on the night to win in dominating fashion.  Sidney was led in scoring by Paxton Ehler with 28 points.  Spencer Eliason scored 12 points for Chadron.

NEBRASKA-COLORADO FOOTBALL SERIES RENEWED

ColoradoHuskers N-1

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has signed a contract to play four football games against former Big Eight and Big 12 rival Colorado beginning in five years.

Nebraska said Thursday that the teams will meet in Lincoln on September 8th, 2018, before a return matchup in Boulder on September 7th, 2019. Colorado will host the Cornhuskers on September 9th, 2023, and return to Lincoln on September 7th, 2024.

The games will be the first in the series since both schools left the Big 12 two years ago, Nebraska going to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-12. The football teams last played in 2010 after meeting for 63 consecutive years.

Nebraska holds a 49-18-2 advantage in the series, including a 15-4 record since 1992.

CSC ENDS FB SIGNING DAY WITH 40

CSC Eagles Logo _ Sports 2012Wednesday was college football signing day, when high school seniors sign binding letters of intent to attend a specific school.   Chadron State had 40 student-athlete signees…31 in the morning, 6 by 4:00 in the afternoon, and 3 more by 8:30 pm.

Head Coach Jay Long is pleased with his first recruiting class…calling it  a great group of student-athletes, some of whom will contribute right away and others will be developed. A CSC graduate and former player who took over the program last year, Long says Chadron State is a great place dedicated to giving opportunities.

He says the whole school…coaches, players, faculty, and staff…worked extremely hard to show potential recruits that Chadron State is a great place to be, with the football program’s success and tradition making student-athletes want to be there.

The 40 recruits are spread evenly on offense and defense. Eighteen are targeted to be defensive players, 18 to be featured on offense, and two as kickers.

Thirteen of the signees are from Nebraska, including 5 from the Panhandle: Colin Deines and Matt Lordino of Chadron and Ty Dunkel, Matt Klein and Randy Wentz of Scottsbluff.

The other Nebraskans are Chance Bauman and Matt Fujan of Beatrice, Mitch Collicott of McCook, Tanner Martin of Grand Island, Tyler Dahlgren of Bertrand, Austin Powell of Lincoln, Creighton Reed of Hastings and Justin Hollman of Crete.

Tanner Wintholz of Sidney was scheduled for an afternoon signing ceremony at Sidney High, but Chadron State releases names only when it has received and processed all the paperwork from a recruit.

Nine signees come from Colorado, including 3 sets of high school teammates: Derek Jackson and Diego Rojas of Pueblo West, Sean Watkins and Josh Johnson of Eaglecrest and Chris Sweeney and Tyler Kiess of Thompson Valley. The others are Baron Coffelt of Castle Rock, Garret Walker of Wiggins and Connor Conilogue of Erie.

Wyoming is sending 5 recruits to CSC…Collin Eisenman of Sheridan, Aaron Fenner of Buffalo, Charles Allen of Douglas, Colton Wright of Burns and Tod Wenger of Cheyenne.
