Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, as part of a sweeping tour of the state, visited Chadron and Alliance Thursday for a Town Hall Forum.  The Alliance event was held at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center.

Questions posed by attendees during the one-hour program spanned a wide array of subjects, including the Keystone XL Pipeline, same sex marriage, financial benefits for elderly Nebraskans, and ground water concerns.

An audience member’s question to the Governor about legalizing medicinal marijuana in Nebraska led to a lively discussion which included comments from other audience members.  Gov. Ricketts stated that he felt more research needed to be done on the true benefits of the drug for medicinal purposes before discussion on legalization could move forward.

HENRY EDWARD SCHERBARTH, 96

Funeral services for Henry Edward Scherbarth of Hay Springs, Nebraska will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs, Nebraska Friday, June 12, 2015 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Peter Bertram officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs City Cemetery.

Henry Edward Scherbarth was born on December 9, 1919, the youngest of three children, to Fred and Mary Scherbarth of Hay Springs and died June 8, 2015 at the age of 95. He lived and died in the house where he was born. Henry was baptized July 13, 1920 and confirmed June 24, 1934 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs.

Formal education included elementary grades in a one-room schoolhouse near his home, high school in Hay Springs (the class of 1938) and geological studies on the GI bill at the Geological Institute of America in Los Angeles.

Henry was drafted into the army in 1942 and served in New Guinea and Australia without a furlough until discharged in 1947. While in Basic Training he proved to be an excellent marksman only to be surpassed by his company captain. (It is said that he could hit a silver dollar on the fence south of his house about 100 yards away.) After the war Henry returned to ranch with his parents.

Geraldine Ruleau became his June 13, 1950. Henry and Gerry provided a home, during childhood and adolescent years for Nick Provost, Susan Bigler, Herb Red Cloud and others. Their nephews, the Stultz boys, Mike and Paul, spent several summers with them and learned to hunt rocks from Henry.

Henry accumulated a great pile of special rocks from the Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota area some of which he turned into bola ties and necklaces. His collection also includes rocks from other areas of the world.

Besides hunting rocks, he also hunted wild game-deer in Nebraska and South Dakota, coyotes up and down the local roads, ducks, pheasants and grouse.

There was also time to fish. One of his earlier exploits was to catch a large trout with his bare hands from a pool in Bordeaux Creek. Fishing took him to Alaska to chase salmon and halibut.

When he had time, he farmed. Henry was especially proud of his Hereford cows. He was also noted for raising purebred Corriedale sheep especially for their wool. Crops included corn, wheat, oats, barley, alfalfa, etc. He was an active farmer to the end.

On March 19, 1992 Geraldine, his wife, passed away. In the years following Arlin Scherbarth and Rodney Scherbarth, his nephews’ sons assisted Henry on the farm. Rodney worked with Henry during the last 25 years.

Henry Edward Scherbarth is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine, parents Fred and Mary Scherbarth; his brother, Leonard; and his sister, Rosemarie Blundell. Survivors include his many nieces and nephews and their families.

Memorial has been established for the Zion Lutheran Church. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

VIRGINIA LORAINE KING, 96

Virginia King1

Funeral services for Virginia King of Hay Springs will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs with Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs City Cemetery.

Virginia Loraine King was born to James Edward Walgren and Emma Elvera (Anderson) Walgren on November 7, 1919 in Hay Springs, Sheridan County, Nebraska. Virginia passed away on June 3, 2015 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, Hay Springs, Sheridan County, Nebraska. Virginia was a resident of Pioneer Manor Nursing Home since July, 2014.

Virginia was raised on a ranch south and west of Hay Springs, Nebraska in Dawes County, Nebraska. She was the third of five children born to James Edward Walgren and Emma E. Walgren. She had two older brothers, Wayne Walgren and Harold Walgren, and two younger brothers, William Walgren and Gerald Walgren.

While growing up on the ranch and farmstead in Dawes County, Nebraska, Virginia attended grade school at Pleasant Hill School. She described an idyllic childhood with her four brothers teasing her unmercifully and so she learned to have a sense of humor as well as an ability to stand up for herself. During her youth, Virginia discovered that she loved to dance and had a wonderful sense of rhythm.

Virginia graduated from Hay Spring High School in 1936, and on December 16 of 1936, she married the love of her life, Kenneth J. King. To that marriage, three children were born, Keith K. King, Elsie M. King (now Caparoon) and Dennis D. King.

After marrying Kenneth J. King, the two of them worked side by side to make a home and a living for their family. As a young farm couple they were proof that hard work can bring success while adhering to strong moral and religious values. Virginia had many talents which are representative of young women of that era. Included in her many talents was the ability to put together a meal upon short notice when friends, family and neighbors dropped by; She was an excellent cook and especially an excellent pie maker. Along with her skills at homemaking and raising a family, Virginia worked side by side with her husband, Kenneth, in the fields. Virginia could plow a field and harvest a crop as well as many farmers. She was also adept at milking cows and shingling roofs. Virginia, on her own, shingled most of the farm outbuildings at one time or another.

Virginia was also an excellent seamstress making many of the clothes for the family and later on for her grandchildren.

As time takes its toll on the body, Virginia discovered the enjoyment of travel. She traveled to many interesting places. While Kenneth was yet alive, they traveled together and enjoyed some of the fruits of their labor. Kenneth died in 1998, and Virginia continued on alone yet still enjoying travel and the close and loving relationship she had with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
