His name was Robert Ball Anderson. The fact that he was the first ex-slave to homestead in Nebraska cements his place in state history.
That he chose Box Butte County for his new home adds local flavor to an already unique story.
You can learn more about Robert Ball Anderson at a “Pre-Chautauqua” program to be held in the community meeting room at the Alliance Learning Center Thursday April 30th at 6:00pm and again Friday May 1st at Noon.
Faye Friesen will present the program, based on Anderson’s book “From Slavery To Affluence: Memoirs Of Robert Anderson, Ex-Slave”, which was co-written with his wife Daisy. The Alliance Public Library has multiple copies of the book available for interested readers.
This program and others like it are being presented in hopes of generating interest and discussion regarding this summer’s Chautauqua event, which will be held June 9-13 in Alliance. More details on the event, which will include historical lectures presented in the characters of noted historical figures, are available on Facebook:

Last year, at Eagle Radio’s “Game Show Night Live”, we gave away a hot tub.
This year, we’re back–and our 2nd Annual Game Show Night Live (this Friday, 8:00pm, Alliance High School Performing Arts Center) is bigger, better and…well…game-showier than ever! Here are 5 Reasons You’ve Got To Be There:
1. You Can Dress Anyway You Like.
Our on-stage contestants are selected completely at random. But twice during the show our host will venture into the live audience for some “Quickie Deals”-anything you can do to stand out from the crowd might help!
Anywhere else but Game Show Night Live, these ladies might be accused of not playing with a full deck.
2. We have a variety of fun game show challenges.
Some of last year’s games will be played again this year–but we also have brand-new games, including two new “Minute To Win It” challenges.
One of last year’s devilishly devious “Minute To Win It” games.
3. Our entire KCOW/Double Q Country/B94.7 team gets in the act.
Last year, in addition to our entire radio team, we were ably assisted by spouses, friends and–of course–the panhandle business community, who work with us to load the show full of prizes.
At last year’s GSNL Eagle Radio account executive Helen Iossi took to the stage as a prize model!
4. Everyone Who Comes Up On Stage Will Walk Away With A Prize.
At Game Show Night Live we want everyone to win! But even if you get called up on stage and can’t find your way out of Contestants Row, we will send you home with a consolation prize–much nicer than Press-On-Nails or Turtle Wax by the way!
If, after hearing us call your name, you wanna yell, scream, or otherwise freak out, it’s cool. Let your game show freak flag fly!
5. YOU COULD WIN FANTASTIC PRIZES! Like a vacation! Or a hot tub! Or furniture! Or electronics! Or other cool stuff! Everybody in our live audience has a chance to win–and even if you don’t win anything, we promise you’ll have a fun night.
Tickets for Game Show Night Live are $5.00 each, available at our KCOW Studios, 120 West 10th St. in Alliance, and at Box Butte Central in downtown Alliance. Tickets will also be available at the door, but buying in advance is recommended; if you arrive at the P.A.C. with tickets in hand, you can get your contestant name sticker and get into the auditorium faster.
The show is open to all ages but you must be 18 or over to win prizes. And if you’re coming just to cheer on a friend (and don’t want to be called to the stage) you can skip the contestant registration desk and head into the auditorium.
Host Jason Wentworth (the one in the tux) and announcer Kalin Krohe (the one covered in peanut butter) can’t wait to see you this Friday night!

Something about Carhenge draws in visitors. Most are tourists. Some are travel writers or photographers.
And yes, a select few see Alliance’s #1 tourist attraction as the perfect place to roll the cameras.
Carhenge was ready for its close up as Anthony De La Torre arrived Friday night March 6th. The players in his band, which happens to be called De La Torre, were on the set by Sunday morning.
De La Torre grew up in Ohio and now resides in Nashville, where the finishing touches are being put on his debut album. He selected Carhenge for the video to his song “Ruins” because of its connections to Stonehenge. The finished video will start with a shiny new car, and end up with band singing in front of that same car–now one of the automotive “ruins” at Carhenge.
During their Alliance visit the band members and assistant Wade Hawkins visited local eateries, toured landmarks and visited KCOW Radio for an interview.
Hawkins says the finished music video will be available on a variety of platforms including YouTube. Those interested in the music of De La Torre can visit:
