KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Kearney Police are having dogs waiting to be adopted,  ride with them in their cruisers to help the pooches find permanent homes.

The Kearney Hub reports that the local police department has been partnering for about a year with the town’s animal shelter to give the dogs more exposure to potential owners. The ride-alongs allow potential owners to see the dogs interact with people, rather than in a pen at the shelter.

Shelter Executive Director Oliva Derr said, “We’ve had a ton of dogs adopted this way.”

Millie, a 10-week-old Bully mix, recently rode with Officer Brian Flynn in his cruiser. A towel protected the upholstery.

In a visit to the local hospital, she comforted a patient transported there by paramedics. She has since been adopted.
