ONE KILLED, FIVE INJURED IN SCOTTS BLUFF CO. ACCIDENT

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman reports that one person was killed in a rollover accident near Minatare late Friday night, July 27.

Taylor Magdaleno, (male) age 21, of Gering, died as a result of injuries suffered in a single vehicle rollover accident near the intersection of County Road 29 and County Road M northwest of Minatare.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Minatare Fire Department, Valley Ambulance, and the Nebraska State Patrol responded. Airlink responded but did not transport any of the victims. County Attorney Doug Warner also responded as coroner.

The investigation revealed that a southbound pickup truck occupied by six males and driven by Drew Schmaltz, age 21, of Minatare, left the roadway and rolled several times. At the time of the accident, four of the males were riding in the cab, and two in the pickup bed. Taylor Magdaleno was the front seat passenger, and was ejected. The other individuals in the vehicle were:

Ruben Esparza, age 21, of Gering
Carlos Palomo, age 21, of Gering
Jake Peltz, age 21, of Alliance
Dillon Broussard, age 22, of Minatare
None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.

All of the occupants received treatment for their injuries. As of early Saturday morning, Jake Peltz was the only person that remained hospitalized. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Following treatment at Regional West Medical Center, Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Drew Schmaltz and transported him to the Scotts Bluff County detention center. He is charged with Second Offense Driving Under the Influence and Felony Motor Vehicle Homicide.
