LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is on the verge of passing a law that requires abortion providers to tell patients about a disputed treatment to stop a medication abortion after the process has started.

Lawmakers gave the measure final approval Thursday on a 36-12 vote after supporters overcame a legislative filibuster. It now heads to Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who opposes abortion.

The bill by Sen. Joni Albrecht, of Thurston, would require abortion providers to tell patients that their pregnancy may still be viable after taking the first of two abortion drugs.

They also would have to notify patients about a state public health website that would include contact information for groups that offer the disputed treatment.

Supporters cite a 2018 study led by an anti-abortion doctor. Abortion-rights supporters say the study was flawed.
