FEE-FREE WEEKEND FOR NPS, FREE TOURS AT WIND CAVE NP

The National Park ServiceMany of America’s national parks are celebrating Presidents’ Day by offering a park visit for free all weekend long, February 15th-17th.

A fee-free day typically includes the waiving of entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees, such as reservation, camping, tours, concessions, and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

Parks in this area waiving entrance fees include Badlands National Park, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, and Scotts Bluff and Jewell Cave National Monuments.

Wind Cave National Park, which doesn’t have an entrance fee, is instead offering free tours. The Garden of Eden tours will begin at the visitor center at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Moderately strenuous with approximately 150 steps, the quarter-mile route and lasts one hour.

“It’s a nice opportunity to see a local attraction while getting out of the cold. It’s 53 degrees year around in the cave,” says Vidal Davila, park superintendent. “We recommend sturdy walking shoes and a light coat or sweater.”

Presidents’ Day was established in 1879 as George Washington’s Birthday, celebrated on his birthday of February 22nd.

It later unofficially included celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday as well (February 12th), and in 1971, it was moved to the third Monday of February due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

Presidents’ Day has now come to symbolize the birthdays and lives of all U.S. presidents.

Throughout the National Park Service, a number of historic sites and memorials honor the lives of many presidents by presenting programs, ceremonies and reenactments.
