EAGLES CLOSE HOME BASKETBALL SEASON THIS WEEKEND

CSC Eagles Logo _ Sports 2012The Chadron State College basketball teams will close out their home schedules this weekend when they host Colorado Christian on Friday night and Colorado Mines on Saturday night. Both doubleheaders begin at 6 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink on Friday for Breast Cancer Awareness and Saturday the lone Chadron State senior, center Sadie Waugh, will be honored prior to the women’s game.

Both Colorado Christian teams have been playing well.

The Cougars’ women are 13-8 for the season and 10-7 in the RMAC. They had won three straight games before falling to Metro State 54-45 last Saturday night. One of their wins was a 77-73 victory over Colorado Mesa, the only loss the Mavericks have sustained this winter.

Mesa shot 50 percent from the field in the game, but Christian shot 61 percent and also outscored the Mavs 20-11 from the free throw line.

The Cougars have beaten the Eagles twice this season—106-68 in a tournament they hosted in mid-November and 91-64 at home on Dec. 8. CSC coach Tim Connealy said Christian is difficult to play because of its unconventional full-court press.
The Cougars are balanced in scoring. Guard Taylor Torres leads them at 14.7 points a game.

The Christian men had won four in a row, including victories over Adams State and Colorado Mesa, both of which are among the top four in the RMAC standings, before losing last weekend to undefeated and No. 1 ranked Metro 92-75.

The Cougars are led in scoring by a pair of guards. Kyle Weaver at 12.1 points a game and Michael Brown at 11.8. They combined for 38 points when the Cougars beat the Eagles 79-65 at home.

The Cougars are 11-14 for the season and 6-11 in the conference.

The Mines women upset Metro State, which is 14-3 in the conference, 57-56 on Jan 12, then lost six of their next eight games. They are 12-11 overall and 9-8 in the conference.

The Lady Orediggers’ top gun is senior Angie Charchalis at 14.1 a game. Sophomore Taylor Helbig is next at 13.2 points a game.

The Mines men are 11-10 for the season and 8-9 in the league. They have three players who are among the top 10 scorers in the league. Luke Meisch, a 6-6 junior, is averaging 17 points and 8.2 rebounds, Trevor Wages, a 6-9 junior, is averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds and guard Brian Muller is averaging 15.4 points.

Despite the firepower, the Orediggers have lost five of their last six games.

The Mines trio poured in 52 points during a 65-59 win over CSC on Dec. 7 in Golden.

After this weekend, the Eagles will visit Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado State-Pueblo on Feb. 22 and 23 and end the season at Black Hills State on March 2.
