Bloomington, Ind. – Dylan Talley’s16 points tied for game-high honors, but a balanced attack led No. 1 Indiana to a 76-47 victory over Nebraska Wednesday evening.

Talley hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor to lead the Huskers (12-13, 3-9 Big Ten), but Indiana had three players in double figures, led by Cody Zeller’s 16 points. Christian Watford and Victor Oladipo added 13 points apiece for the Hoosiers, who improved to 22-3 and remained tied with Michigan State for the Big Ten lead with a 10-2 mark.

The Huskers did a good job of controlling the tempo in the first half and trailed 27-18 heading into the break. Nebraska held the Hoosiers to 31.6 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, but Indiana, which did not have a field goal in the final seven minutes of the half, went 13-of-16 from the foul line in the half and got the line 29 times, compared to 11 for Nebraska.

Nebraska did a good job of mucking up the game in the first 11 minutes, holding Indiana to 2-of-11 shooting and taking a 14-11 lead after a pair of Jordan Tyrance free throws. Indiana woke up as a basket by Will Sheehey ended a stretch of 5:30 for the Hoosiers without a field goal and started a 10-0 run for the Hoosiers, keyed by 3-pointers by Oladipo and Yogi Ferrell.

Talley, who had 10 of his 16 points in the first half, got Nebraska within 21-18 after two straight baskets, but the Hoosiers closed the half by scoring the final six points, all coming from the free throw line.

Indiana got out quickly in the second half, as an Olidipo putback started a 7-0 spurt that put the Hoosiers up 34-18 and forced the Huskers to call an early timeout after a 13-0 spurt that spanned both halves.

Nebraska trailed 39-23 before a Ray Gallegos 3-pointer and a Benny Parker jumper pulled the Huskers within 11, at 39-28 with 14:18. The Huskers had a chance to cut the lead back to single digits on the next possession, but Ubel was called for his fourth foul, sending him to the bench.  Ubel would play just 23 minutes scoring four points and grabbing eight rebounds despite playing with strep throat.

Indiana took advantage as consecutive 3-pointers from Sheehey and Remy Abell pushed the lead back to 17 points and Indiana used a 15-2 spurt over the next five minutes to build a 24-point lead. Indiana went 6-of-9 from 3-point range in the second half and led by as many as 31 in the final minutes.

The Huskers return home Saturday night, as they take on No. 8 Michigan State on Legends Weekend. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling 800-8-BIGRED.

DRY SPELL DOOMS WNCC MEN IN HEARTBREAKER

WNCC_Cougar _ 250 Pixels                The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team had a five minute dry spell in the second half that saw Laramie County Community College go on a 16-0 run and capture a 76-74 South Sub-Region win over the Cougars Tuesday evening at Cougar Palace.

“They did what they needed to do and we didn’t do what we knew that worked,” WNCC coach Russ Beck said. “Our communication started to break down because of a little bit lack of energy and because of that we lost our composure a little bit.

“That was evident in the last minute of the game when it is still a ball game. We turned the ball over twice, Zach misses a tough one. It was kind of a heartbreaker but, shoot, we just have to get past it. We have two really tough games this weekend. We have to let it sting but we have to move on. This is one that we should have had tonight.”

What hurts even more is the Cougars were playing so well as they built a 17-point lead, 67-50 on buckets by Chad Calcaterra and Cody Johnson. Beck said was pleased how they were playing at that point, too.

“It was a tale of two halves,” he said. “We played great early on and we had a good 10 minute stretch of scoring with good defense and talk and we equaled that in the second half except with a poor performance defensively, which led to easy buckets for them.”

WNCC started the contest red-hot, running out to a 15-2 lead to start the game on two Sebastian Suarez 3-pointers and a dunk, while Charles Ward buried a trey and scored after stealing the ball.

Things changed quickly as LCCC came back to cut the lead to 21-20 on a 3-pointer by Julian Chiera. The Golden Eagles took their first lead moments later at 30-26 after two big 3-pointers, including a trey by Emory Bennett. WNCC came back to take a 41-35 halftime lead behind a big 3-pointer by Ward and six points from Quante Cooley.

WNCC kept playing well in the second half, building a double-digit lead at 52-42 on a bucket by Ward. The Cougars’ Zach Clemens then scored six straight points to burst open the gate to a 58-44 lead with 14 minutes to play.

The Cougars led 67-50 with about 10 minutes to play. LCCC then scored seven straight points to slice the lead to 67-57, but WNCC got a free throw by Cooley to go back up by 11 points with just under seven minutes to play.

That was when LCCC went on the 16-0 run that spanned over six minutes that saw the Golden Eagles take a 73-68 lead. WNCC finally stopped the dry spell with a free throw by Tahir Little. WNCC cut the lead to one point, 75-74 on a Chad Calcaterra old-fashioned play with 11.5 seconds to play. Calcaterra’s field goal, by the way, was the first field goal the Cougars scored since Johnson’s bucket to make it 67-50 in over eight or nine minutes.

After two missed free throws, WNCC had a chance for a last second possession to either tie or win it, but a turnover ruined the comeback.

Both teams shot well. WNCC was 43 percent from the field while LCCC was 48 percent. The Golden Eagles buried seven treys on the night and the Cougars were one behind with six 3-pointers.

WNCC had three players in double figures. Ward led the way with 25 points followed by Johnson with 12 and Suarez with 11. Cooley finished with eight points and 11 rebouinds.

LCCC also had three in double digits. Chiera led the way with 19 points followed by Ude Ifeanyichukwu with 17 and Stewart Washington with 11.

WNCC will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Otero Junior College on Friday and Trinidad State Junior College on Saturday for two more sub-region contests.

Chadron girls’ basketball team traveled to Alliance on Tuesday night to play Gordon-Rushville in subdistricts and came away with a 56-29 win, against the Mustangs.

The Lady Cardinals only trailed for a few minutes in the first quarter, and then went on a 22-1 scoring route that included a 13-7 first quarter lead, and a score of 29-8 halftime score.  The Cardinals then cruised in the third, outscoring the Mustang’s by 32 to end the third quarter 46-14.  Chadron won 56-29.

The Lady Cardinals were led by Briley Hannaford and Alia Brennan in scoring; Briley had a team high of 16 points, while Alia Brennan came in with 11 points including 9 of 10 from the free throw line.

Chadron will play again on Valentine’s Day against Kimball in the subdistrict final.  The Kimball Longhorns got by the Mitchell Tigers by a score of 54-52.

WNCC MEN HOST LCCC TONIGHT

Zac Clemens

The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team will be looking to add to its current 2-game winning streak when they host Laramie County Community College tonight at Cougar Palace. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Cougar Palace, and can heard on Double Q Country radio.

The contest is vital for sub-region standings for both squads. The Cougars moved up to seventh in the standings after dropping Lamar 70-62 on Friday and Northeastern Junior College 84-76 on Saturday.

For the Golden Eagles, they are in a fight to win the sub-region. LCCC comes in with an 8-4 sub-region record and 18-8 overall. North Platte leads the sub-region with a 10-3 record followed by Lamar at 9-4.

Sebastian Suarez said they played good team ball over the weekend.

“We had good practices this week and we have good communication,” Suarez said. “We are talking more and we have a lot of energy. We have been good teammates and that is why we have been playing better the last few games.”

Suarez had an outstanding contest on Saturday, pouring in 19 points. Cody Johnson also had 19 points to go along with his 10 rebounds.

Suarez said the key to their success lies in sharing the ball. “We have to share the ball and we all have to score,” he said. “If one person gets 30 points and the rest get five, which is no good. We all have to share and we all have to score, and that is how we are going to win games.”

And that is exactly what the Cougars did this past weekend in collecting the two wins – share the ball and have balanced scoring. Saturday night, Tahir Little dished out 12 assists in the contest. The Cougars had 19 as a team.

This contest will not be an easy by any means. The last time these two squads played back on Jan. 31, the Golden Eagles came back from a 29-26 halftime deficit and upended the Cougars 74-68 at Cheyenne, Wyo.

Laramie County has a couple of dangerous scorers in Julian Chiera and Deshon Portley, who finished with 22 and 19 points in the first time these two squads played. LCCC also received nine blocks from Ude Ifeanyichukwu.

As for WNCC, They only had two players in double figures, led by Charles Ward with 27 points and Quante Cooley with 17. The big thing for the Cougars in the loss was 3-point shooting, where they were just 3 of 12 for the game.

If WNCC is to make it three in a row, they will need to play like they did this past weekend, where they play under control and don’t lose focus, which was something that WNCC coach Russ beck lauded the team for doing in the win Friday against Lamar Community College.

After today’s contest, the Cougars will have four straight sub-region contests on the road beginning this weekend when they travel to Otero Junior College on Friday and Trinidad State Junior College on Saturday.

NOTES: The Cougar men also have a schedule change with the North Platte game later this month. That game has been moved to Friday, Feb. 22 beginning at 4 p.m. The game was originally slated for Saturday morning, but because of a scheduling conflict with North Platte and Eastern Wyoming on Saturday, the contest was moved. The men’s contest on Feb. 22 will be played before the Class B-6 girls championship game that night that begins at 7 p.m.

EAGLE SOFTBALL IN VEGAS

Eagles celebrate home run by Rebecca Wesch
Eagles celebrate home run by Rebecca Wesch

LAS VEGAS – The Chadron State College softball team got its offense going in the seventh inning but the Eagles’ rally fell short against Western Oregon in the finale of the Desert Stinger Tournament Sunday in Las Vegas. Chadron State went 1-4 at the Desert Stinger but they were competitive in every game.

In Sunday’s game, Western Oregon was up 4-0 in the final inning when the Eagles cut the margin in half when Sarah Knudsen followed a sharply-hit infield single to short by Amy Schartz with a 2-run homer over the right field fence.

The Wolves got the first out of the inning on a fly ball to right, but  Rebecca Wetsch then hit her second home run of the weekend, this one a towering shot over center field. That would be as close as the Eagles got as pitcher Jordan Williams settled in and got the final two batters to end the Eagles’ comeback.

Williams, who entered Sunday’s game 0-3, allowed just four hits in the game. Nikki Ritzen added the Eagles’ other two hits, both singles. Western Oregon improves to 2-6, while Chadron State falls to 1-4.

The Eagles had strong numbers at the Desert Stinger, hitting .312 as a team compared to .286 for their opponents. They were outscored by just 3 runs…26-23…and  CSC pitchers struck out 27 batters. The Eagles are now off for two weeks until they open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action with a pair of doubleheaders at Colorado State University-Pueblo on the 22nd and 23rd.
