Broncos Open Training Camp Thursday With Elway Declaring Open QB Competition

Quarterbacks Will Get Even Distribution of Snaps to Determine Starter

John Elway declared the Super Bowl champs’ quarterback competition wide open entering training camp. Mark Sanchez will be first up Thursday morning, followed by Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch. Coach Gary Kubiak said he’ll split snaps right down the middle as he searches for Peyton Manning’s successor. The winner will direct a Broncos offense that Elway reconstructed in the aftermath of Denver’s defensive-fueled Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers. While only four offensive starters return at their same position, the Von Miller-led defense returns all but two starters. However, Elway said Pro Bowlers Aqib Talib, who was shot in his right leg in Dallas on June 5th, and DeMarcus Ware will start out camp on the non-football injury list.

NFL Training Camp Notebook

— The NFC-champion Carolina Panthers have signed safety Kurt Coleman to a three-year contract extension through the 2019 season. He led the Panthers and finished tied for third in the NFL with a career-high seven interceptions last year, his first with the Panthers. The 28-year-old finished third on the team with 103 tackles.

— The Rams have released Nick Foles after failing to trade the disgruntled quarterback. Foles has not been involved with the team since the Rams took California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the overall draft.

— Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory is facing a longer suspension over another violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Gregory is already suspended for the first four games of the season and could receive an additional 10-game ban for another failed drug test. Team owner Jerry Jones acknowledged that the former Nebraska standout is undergoing treatment.

— The Chiefs have placed running back Jamaal Charles on the physically unable to perform list following surgery for a torn ACL in his right knee last season. Coach Andy Reid says it should not be considered a setback in his return from a knee injury.
