CHICAGO (AP) – J.J. Abrams says “Star Trek” has to be sexy to keep with the “original spirit of the series.”

Abrams tells Playboy that in the first movie, he had fun with the idea that Uhura and Spock were a couple. He says “Star Trek Into Darkness” “takes that further and asks how that’s possible.” He says they explore what Uhura could see in Spock.

As for what Spock could see in Uhura? Abrams says she’s played by Zoe Saldana, of course.

Star Trek Into Darkness opens May 17.

 

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Thousands of fans are expected to join some of country music’s biggest stars in mourning George Jones.

The late country music superstar’s funeral will be held Thursday morning at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. Jones died last week at 81.

Former first lady Laura Bush will speak at the funeral along with friends and fellow country stars Barbara Mandrell and Kenny Chesney. Jones also will be serenaded by Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, Charlie Daniels and Randy Travis, who were all scheduled perform at the public memorial with several others.

The funeral will be broadcast live on cable music television channels CMT and GAC and – in a nod to simpler times when Jones was at his biggest – on all local television networks.

ATLANTA (AP) – Authorities say Chris Kelly, half of the 1990s kid rap duo behind one of the decade’s most memorable songs, “Jump,” has died at an Atlanta hospital of an apparent drug overdose. He was 34.

Kelly, known as “Mac Daddy,” and Chris Smith, known as “Daddy Mac,” made up the rap group Kris Kross, who were known for wearing their clothes backwards as they rhymed.

Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester says the death appears have been a possible overdose.

According to Lester, police were called to Kelly’s home around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was then transported to the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center.

Investigator Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office said Kelly was pronounced dead at the hospital around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) – Kenny Chesney is lending a figurative hand to those who lost limbs in the Boston Marathon bombing. The country music star has set up a fund that buy prosthetics and physical therapy for bombing victims who lost arms or legs to the dual blasts. Chesney started the “Spread the Love” fund with his own money – and will also donate some of the proceeds from his single by the same name to the cause. Three died and more than 260 were hurt in the attacks near the finish line of the annual race.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A paramedic says the day Michael Jackson died, he looked like a person “at the end stage of a long disease process.” Richard Senneff was among the rescuers who responded to the home Jackson was renting on June 25, 2009. He says Jackson seemed to be terminally ill – and that his hands, feet and lips were blue – an indication the pop star was already dead and hadn’t been breathing for a while. Senneff says he found Dr. Conrad Murray “very busy” trying in vain to revive Jackson. He also said he found an IV pole, oxygen tanks and a nightstand with several medicine bottles. The paramedic testified – as he did at Murray’s criminal trial – that the doctor never mentioned he had given Jackson the anesthetic propofol. Jackson’s mother Katherine is suing AEG Live, claiming the concert company was wrong to have hired Murray as Jackson’s physician as he prepared for a series of London shows.

LOS ANGELES (AP)  Andy Dick says it’s amazing he made it so far on “Dancing With the Stars.” He was voted off last night, which came as no surprise. He had some of the lowest scores all season and was at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard this week. While the judges praised his spirit, they consistently said Dick lacked technique. Actor Ingo Rademache was also in the bottom two.

NEW YORK (AP) – “American Idol” used to be the most popular show on television. Now, it’s not even the most popular competition show. Both editions of “The Voice” and “Dancing With the Stars” beat Idol in the ratings last week. “The Voice” was watched by an average of about 13 and a-half million people. “Dancing With the Stars” scored an average 13.2 million viewers. Idol averaged fewer than 12 million. The number one show of the week, as usual, was “NCIS,” which led with 17.3 million viewers.
