STING MOVES CONCERT AFTER ENVIRONMENTALISTS RAISE A STINK (WELL…NOT LITERALLY)
MANILA, Philippines (AP) – Environmental activists say Sting should practice what he preaches with the environment, and Sting agreed. Sting has moved his concert in the Philippines after environmentalists circulated a petition saying the original venue is owned by a conglomerate that plans to uproot 182 trees for a parking lot and mall expansion. The SM Mall of Asia Arena says Sting himself made the decision to change the site of his December 9 concert. The original arena’s business manager says the venue became “collateral damage” in the environmentalists’ campaign.
KEITH RICHARDS: I REMEMBER THE GIRLS, AND BASICALLY THAT’S IT
LONDON (AP) – Keith Richards says he may not recall the order of events in his life, but he remembers the girls. Richards saw footage from the Rolling Stones documentary “Crossfire Hurricane” and says, “I’m looking at the chicks in the background – oh yeah, I remember them.” What he may not remember is the guys in the foreground. Ronnie Wood says he sat next to Richards while they were watching early footage included in the film and Richards said, “Who’s that?” Wood said, “That’s Mick.” Richards then asked, “Who’s that bloke?” and Wood said, “That’s you.”
GLES NOTES: CONFESSIONS OF A BEGINNING BROADCASTER
GLES NOTES
Mike Glesinger speaking of sports (and more…)
I WISH I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW..OR CONFESSIONS OF A BEGINNING BROADCASTER
We’ve all heard the saying..” I wish I knew then what I know now”. I find myself saying that a lot. This year marks my 30th season of broadcasting High School sports and through the years I think I’ve experienced every sort of weather, location and technical problem there is. This takes me back to my first year as a sportscaster working for my first commercial radio station. I started working at KNLV Radio in Ord, Ne. in May of 1982, fresh out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and ready to become “Boy Wonder” of radio. While I was in college, broadcasting students would call play by play of the Cornhusker games on the student radio station, KRNU-FM. We did football, Freshman football, Men’s and Women’s basketball and baseball. We just did home games so we were spoiled by the first class facilities and all the perks, like lunch in a nice press box, a press room with stats, rosters, programs etc, all the pop you can drink and a great view of the games, out of the elements. When you get into the real world…this all changes.
I thought it was a great thing to have on your resume and audition tape that you broadcast University of Nebraska sports and I always tried to work that in a conversation..”Yea..I used to broadcast the Huskers”. I don’t know if that helped in landing my first job, but it was all I had. So…football season 1982, I’m ready to go. My first assignment…8 man football..Arcadia at Sargent. “All right”..let’s get going! “OK..who’s keeping stats..who’s spotting..who’s engineering? My partner says..”well it’s just you and me, we’ve only got a 2 man crew and we do our own stats and spotting”. “Oh..when I did the Huskers..we had a 6 man crew”…”note to self”….get the rosters and starters in advance and make a bunch of enlarged copies.
Well we get to the game site and I walk up and say ” I’m here to broadcast the game..where do I set up in the press box”? The local Athletic Director says ” Well, we have a very small crows nest and there’s only room for the clock operator and public address announcer… If I’d have known you were comming I would have made arrangements to have a flat bed truck or somthing for you”. “Oh, when I did the Huskers, we always had a spot in the press box.” “Humm..note to self..”it might be a good idea to call ahead and let them know you are comming.” “OK, where would you like us to set up? “You can stand on top of the crows nest and run your cables down to the phone jack inside” “OK..how about chairs?”
“Again, If I had known you were comming , I would have had chairs for you.” By the way, do you have any coats or anything, it might rain”. “Oh, when I was doing the Huskers, we had a heated press box.. “note to self…”it might be a good idea to bring coats and plastic sacks to protect the equipment.”
So we crawl up on top of the crows nest with small raindrops falling and a big gust of wind blows my roster off the roof…”Humm..note to self…it might be a good idea to tape the rosters to a board of some sort so they don’t blow away”.
So the game goes along and it’s a pretty good game..A Sargent player makes a long run and I say…”he’s to the 30..the 40..the 50…the…30…what!! This field is only 80 yards long!…”Humm..note to self…it might be a good idea to study the 8-man football rules”.
So the game ends and needless to say, I’m a little bit humbled. It was certainly a lot different than I thought it would be. No perks..No comfort..NO FREE FOOD AND POP! But then it dawned on me, it’s the game and the kids and the hometowns that are the most important, I was just the messenger, to bring the game to Grandparents and fans and anybody who couldn’t attend. It’s not about me. It’s all those other folks and more. So I can talk about broadcasting the Huskers, all I want, but it doesn’t matter and that is a lesson I learned very early. So like I said at the beginning…”I wish I knew then, what I know now”.

UPPER NIOBRARA WHITE NRD OFFERING FIRE RECOVERY HELP
The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District is offering a helping hand to landowners in Dawes, Sioux, Sheridan, and Box Butte Counties whose lands were burned during this summer’s fires.
NRD manager Lyndon Vogt says the NRD board is offering a discount for reforestation projects in the burned areas, with a 50% discount up to $500 per individual landowner on projects using either seedlings or seeds.
That’s enough for 1,000 bare root seedling or 500 potted seedlings. Details on seeds are still being worked, including what species will be available, but the cost is expected to run from $25-to-60 dollars a pound.
Vogt says landowners can reduce their share of reforestation costs down to just 25% if they’re willing to follow the planting specifications of the Wild Nebraska program…administered jointly by the NRD and Nebraska Game and Parks. He says the rules are relatively simple and are intended to increase the survival chances of the trees.
Landowners who have to replace shelter belts can also get a 50% cost share from the UNWNRD…not only on trees, but also on fabric, planting, and installation regardless of the age of the damaged shelter belt and with a maximum of $5,000 per individual instead of $500.
Vogt says the NRD board is also looking at other possible fire recovery cost-shares, but has made no decisions at this time…recommending that those who lost pasture contact the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Vogt says anyone wanting to sign up for any of the cost-share programs simply needs to contact the Upper Niobrara White NRD offices in Chadron or one of the NRCS offices in the NRD. Applications must be in by January 15th so seedlings can be available for spring planting.
In a related story, Game and Parks is contacting landowners to coordinate replacement of fences lost to the fires on agency lands. Deputy Director Tim McCoy says it follows Nebraska fencing law and works with neighboring landowners to replace and repair damaged fences.
He says agency staffers will contacting neighboring landowners to identify priority fences on pastures they hope to graze early next year, and promises flexibility on the use of contractors, work agreements and other tools on such projects.
McCoy says Game and Parks also is exploring additional measures that can be taken to assist wildlife and local areas in recovery efforts.

MISS CHADRON/MISS NORTHWEST PAGEANT THIS SUNDAY

The 22nd annual Miss Chadron/Miss Northwest Scholarship Pageant is this Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in the Chadron High auditorium, the first time it hasn’t been held on a Saturday night.
Co-director Marleta Hastings says the change should be more convenient for contestants, judges, and audience members alike…just one reason she’s excited about the event, which has the theme Glitz and Glam as well as having Miss Nebraska Mariah Cook as co-MC
Hastings’ co-director is Renae Noble, who says this year’s pageant…their second…has even more of a family feel for her and Hastings because their daughters are the choreographers for the dance numbers featuring the contestants.
The winners of the two titles…Miss Chadron and Miss Northwest…not only advance to the Miss Nebraska Pageant and a possible shot at becoming Miss America, they receive one-year tuition waiver scholarships to Chadron State College. Contestant Chelsea Riggs of Bridgeport says that’s the primary reason she entered.
Allison Hooper, a CSC junior, is an example of another major reason for entering the pageant…getting encouraged to do so, in her case by a former contestant. Hooper says she tried the same tactic this year to get some of her friends to enter, but got a good-natured turn down from them.
The most successful of this year’s Miss Chadron and Miss Northwest contestants is Megan Dimmitt of Alliance, who already has two titles under her belt and is a former Box Butte County Fair Queen.
Again, the Miss Chadron/Miss Northwest Pageant moves this year to Sunday afternoon at 2:00, still at the Chadron High School Auditorium. Tickets are still $5 and will be available at the door.

RONNIE WOOD HINTS AT MORE ROLLING STONES SHOWS
LONDON (AP) – Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood is teasing that they could play more shows than the ones they have planned for London and Newark, New Jersey. Wood attended the premiere of the Stones documentary “Crossfire Hurricane” and says he can’t believe how good the band is sounding in rehearsals. Wood says once the wheel is turning he doesn’t think they’ll be able to stop. The London shows are in November, and the Newark shows are set for December 13 and 15.
JEFF LYNNE REMAKES HIS OWN MUSIC
NEW YORK (AP) – Maybe you won’t be able to hear the changes Jeff Lynne has made to Electric Light Orchestra songs, but he does. Lynne listened to each song about a hundred times to painstakingly remake them for his album, “Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra.” Lynne says the changes may be technical but the sound is different and “much more powerful.” Lynne has also done an album of standards called “Long Wave.” They’re both out now.
