Chadron – The 83-acre Spotted Tail Fire about 5 miles south of Chadron was officially declared 100% contained this afternoon.
The fire was entirely on U-S Forest Service land, and Incident Commander Brian Daunt of the U.S. Forest Service says a transition of incident control to the Pine Ridge Ranger District level occurred at 3:00 p.m. today.
Daunt says firefighters and other resources were released throughout the day for reassignment to other fires or to return to their home stations, but with crews continuing to monitor and patrol the burned area for several days…during which smoke may still be seen.
Daunt also says he wants to extend the gratitude and appreciation of the Forest Service to the local Volunteer Fire Departments and all other cooperators for their excellent, professional work on the fire.
The Spotted Tail Fire began late Saturday, but no cause has been released – although the lack of lightning strongly suggests it was a man-caused blaze. It burned in an area that also burned in the much larger 2006 fire of the same name.

HOW TAYLOR SWIFT DEALS WITH FAME
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Sometimes the pressure of fame gets to Taylor Swift. SEATTLE (AP) – A Seattle man named Michael Henrichsen has ideas about how he might celebrate his 26th birthday this week.
First, Billy Idol rolls up in a limo and tells him to hop in. There are women everywhere. And later, when the British rock icon takes the stage, 1,800 of his closest friends go wild.
It’s not as far-fetched as it sounds. After a two-year campaign, Henrichsen has persuaded Idol to play his birthday party in Seattle on Friday night.
It took a lot of work. Henrichsen got a website, playmybirthdaybillyidol.com; got endorsements from B-list celebrities; and put on concerts dubbed “Billy Idol Aid” that raised more than $10,000 for a food bank and the American Red Cross.
Henrichsen says the party is going to be “pretty much the coolest night ever.”
LONDON (AP) – The latest James Bond movie is getting its world premiere in London, with Prince Charles on hand to give it a royal seal of approval.
Charles and his wife Camilla are due to attend the screening at the Royal Albert Hall, along with stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and Javier Bardem.
Proceeds from Tuesday’s royal gala are going to charities that help members of Britain’s intelligence services.
“Skyfall” is the 23rd official Bond film and Craig’s third outing as the suave superspy. Dench plays spy chief M, battling a crisis with roots in her past, and Bardem is a villain bent on revenge.
Some critics are hailing the Sam Mendes-directed film as the best Bond in years.
“Skyfall” opens in Britain on Friday and in the U.S. Nov. 9.
American Indian Movement activist turned actor Russell Means died early today of cancer at his ranch on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Porcupine. He was 62.
Means, a Wanblee native who grew up in the San Francisco area, announced last August that he had inoperable throat cancer and was abandoning mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies and alternative treatments.
Means helped lead AIM’s 1973 armed occupation of Wounded Knee, a 71-day siege that included several gunbattles with federal officers and 3 deaths…an FBI agent and 2 protesters.
Means told the AP in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians…who were ashamed of their heritage…but that all of that had changed now.
He also said that AIM faded away as more and more Native Americans became self-aware and self-determined.
In the 1980s, Means got involved in politics. In 1984, he agreed to be Larry Flynt’s vice president in the Hustler magazine publisher’s quixotic bid to grab the Republic presidential nomination from incumbent Ronald Reagan.
Four years later, he made his own unsuccessful bid for the Libertarian nomination for president.
Means also entered Oglala Sioux tribal politics, winning the tribal presidential primaries in both 2002 and 2004 but losing in the general election both times.
In 2002, he was defeated by John Yellow Bird Steele…who became just the second OST president to win back-to-back terms…and fell in 2004 to Cecilia Fire Thunder…the first female president of the OST.
Means was probably best-known in the final 2 decades of his life as an actor…starting in 1992 with his portrayal of Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis’ Hawkeye in “The Last of the Mohicans.”
Among his other work was the 1994 film “Natural Born Killers,” the voice of Chief Powhatan in Disney’s 1995 animated “Pocahontas” and TV shows that included Curb Your Enthusiasm, Walker-Texas Ranger, and Nash Bridges.
Means also became an author with his 1995 autobiography, “Where White Men Fear to Tread.” He said he tried to pull no punches in it, talking about his failures as well as his victories.
Means said that in the book “I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be.”
Openly critical of mainstream media, Means often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. In his later years, he communicated mostly through YouTube videos and blog posts on his personal website.
Russell Means was married 5 times and is survived by his wife of 13 years, Pearl Daniels. He had 9 children and, in Lakota tradition, adopted many others. Means had cut off his iconic braids last year in what he called at the time a traditional Lakota gesture of mourning for his people.

GARTH BROOKS: OFFICIAL COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME MEMBER
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Garth Brooks, Connie Smith and keyboard player Hargus “Pig” Robbins are the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. They were inducted in a star-studded ceremony in Nashville Sunday night. George Strait, Bob Seger and James Taylor performed in tribute to Brooks. Lee Ann Womack and Merle Haggard saluted Smith. And Ronnie Dunn along with Ronnie Milsap played for Robbins. The tears started flowing for Brooks as he talked to reporters on the red carpet with wife Trisha Yearwood. He got more emotional as the night went on, thanking friends, family and industry professionals who helped him along the way.
GARTH BROOKS LOOKS AHEAD
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Garth Brooks is kicking around ideas for a comeback. He says “we’re just going to start. It’s going to be fun.” Brooks retired to raise his kids, and now his youngest daughter, Allie, is a junior in high school. His wife, Trisha Yearwood, says Allie is ready for the couple to go on the road again because she is doing every after-school activity possible. Brooks said great songwriters “can birth a career, but the greatest ones can bring life back into one.” He said they will be “looking hard for songs just to see what the future might hold.” Brooks is 50 years old.
GEORGE STRAIT ON GARTH BROOKS
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – George Strait says Garth Brooks “transcends country music.” But he didn’t think that right away. Strait remembers Brooks opening a show for him years ago, sitting on the stage hanging his feet over while singing to the crowd. Strait says he thought to himself, “I’m not sure this is going to work out for the boy.” Strait says it’s been amazing to watch how Brooks exploded into the biggest-selling artist of all time, and then laid it all down to raise his kids.
TAYLOR SWIFT RELEASES ‘RED’
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Taylor Swift says the word “conflicted” could describe a lot of the reasons why she wrote the songs on her new album, “Red.” She says they deal with a couple of “tumultuous relationships” where she didn’t know if she should stay or leave, trust her ex, or not believe a thing he said. Swift says she realized with her first single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” that once she put it out there, there was no going back. She wrote 10 tracks by herself and six with other top songwriters. “Red” is out today.
JASON ALDEAN TO PLAY THREE STADIUMS NEXT YEAR
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) – Jason Aldean is playing three stadiums on his “Night Train” tour next year: Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and his dream location: Sanford Stadium at the University of Georgia. His “My Kinda Party” tour wraps up in Dallas on October 27th.
REBA MCENTIRE TO DEBUT NEW SONGS ON TV SHOW
UNDATED (AP) – Reba McEntire’s new TV show, “Malibu Country,” will feature some of her own songs. She tells “Entertainment Tonight” that she has written a lot of new tunes for the show, and there are two included in the first episode. Reba says she’s already talked to Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson about appearing. So it’s only a matter of writing them into the plot in an authentic way. She says “everything about this show’s got to be honest.” “Malibu Country” debuts November 2nd on ABC.
JERROD NIEMANN TO RELEASE NEW SINGLE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Jerrod Niemann is slowing things down with his new single, “Only God Could Love You More.” It’s the second release from his new album, “Free The Music.” Niemann co-wrote the ballad with buddies Lee Brice and Jon Stone. He says he wanted to keep the vocals simple, with no harmonies, because the song has a lot going on musically. It uses French horns and other orchestral instruments.
