DUSTIN HOFFMAN: RECEIVING KENNEDY CENTER HONOR “SURREAL”

WASHINGTON (AP) – For a man who makes his living with words, Dustin Hoffman could only come up with one to describe his feelings at getting a Kennedy Center Honor. He described the whirlwind weekend rubbing shoulders with the president, members of the State Department and other honorees as “surreal.” One thing that made it real for him – his family. There were dozens of people who arrived with Hoffman at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts last night for his tribute. Hoffman says it was great to see them all together and all dressed up. During his tribute, Robert DeNiro says Hoffman made it hard for other actors because of his level of preparation and dedication to his craft. DeNiro says after Hoffman came along, it forced all other actors to – as DeNiro put it – “get it right.”

The Kennedy Center Honors were taped last night and will air on CBS on December 26.

HOLY GEARSHIFT, THE BATMOBILE’S FOR SALE!

LOS ANGELES (AP) – To the auction house! Let’s go! The original Batmobile Adam West drove in the ’60s TV series is up for bid. The Batmobile is 19 feet long with a bubble top. It’s a souped up version of a one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. The Batmobile will be sold January 19 in Scottsdale, Arizona. It does not include all the cool gadgets from the TV series.

As Mayor of Quahog, he had to sell the car to balance the city budget.

GOT 19 GRAND? YOU CAN OWN GEORGE HARRISON’S BEATLE BOOTS!

LONDON (AP) – George Harrison’s leather jacket from his Cavern Club days is up for auction. Bonhams auction house expects it to sell for at least $140,000. His “Beatle boots” are expected to sell for at least $19,000. Bonhams estimates the guitar Paul McCartney played as a member of the pre-Beatles group The Quarry Men will sell for at least $32,000. Plaster casts of Harrison’s hands are for sale, as are four prop umbrellas from the movie “Help,” the trumpet used on the song “Martha My Dear” and an Apple Records dartboard. The auction is December 12.

MICHAEL JACKSON STUNK UP THE STUDIO–LITERALLY–DURING CREATION OF “THRILLER”

UNDATED (AP) – It’s still memorable enough to get people to the dance floor – and has spawned any number of imitations. But many music fans might forget that the title track to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” wasn’t the first single released from the album, which was released 30 years ago today. In fact, it was the final single from the project. The first was “The Girl Is Mine,” a duet Jackson did with Paul McCartney. It wasn’t as well received as later hits like “Billie Jean,” “Human Nature,” “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Starting Something.” Quincy Jones produced “Thriller” and says he gave Jackson a nickname while they worked on the project: “smelly.” The story went that it was because Jackson would go for several straight days in the studio without bathing. But Jones says he gave Jackson the nickname because the singer would use “smelly” as a substitute for funky – because he thought funky sounded too much like profanity.

JASON’S YOUTUBE FLASHBACK! 11/29/12

One of today’s entertainment stories notes that Canadian rockers Rush are leading fan voting for the next class of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.  Which reminded me of Rush lead singer Geddy Lee’s finest hour (in this retro nerd’s opinion):

“ROCKIN’ EVE” WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO DICK CLARK

NEW YORK (AP) – This New Year’s Eve show on ABC will be more than a look back at the past 12 months. It will also feature a look back at the life of Dick Clark, the man who hosted the event for 40 years. Clark died in April at age 82. During the December 31 show, there will be a two-hour tribute to Clark before the countdown to 2013 begins. Ryan Seacrest will host the countdown to midnight from Times Square, with Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, Flo Rida and Pitbull among those performing.

PAUL MCCARTNEY: “HARDCORE” DRUG USE NOT A FACTOR IN “SGT. PEPPER” ALBUM

WASHINGTON (AP) – Paul McCartney acknowledges drugs played a big part in the making of “Sgt. Pepper,” but he says it never was anything hardcore. He made those remarks to interviewer Joe Smith, who has donated audio of dozens of musician interviews to the Library of Congress, which has put them online for anyone to hear. In another interview, Mick Jagger says he believes the Rolling Stones’ bad-boy image is what led to Keith Richards becoming a junkie and Brian Jones “cracking up completely.” Bo Diddley says Elvis Presley made a lot of money by copying him and Jackie Wilson, and he takes his hat off to Presley for doing that.
