MUSICIANS UNITE FOR STORM RELIEF COMPILATION CD

NEW YORK (AP) – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Billy Squier and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir are among a long list of artists contributing to “Songs After Sandy.” Proceeds from the just completed three-volume CD compilation will go to grassroots community based charities working to restore neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey that were devastated by Superstorm Sandy. Other featured artists on the compilation include Jeff Lynne, Joan Osbourne, Eric Burdon and Dave Stewart. The CD is available on PledgeMusic.com.

MR. DRUMMOND, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

NEW YORK (AP) – Even though he played the father in “Diff’rent Strokes,” Conrad Bain never was a father figure to Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges and Dana Plato.

As Bain told AP Radio in 1991, “they had parents of their own.” Coleman, Bridges and Plato later became infamous for their personal problems. Bridges and Plato each had arrest records and drug problems. Plato OD’d in 1999. Coleman had financial and legal troubles. He died in 2010. Bain blamed the business. He said “it would take an unusual circumstance for any child to survive unscathed.”

Before “Diff’rent Strokes,” Bain played Bea Arthur’s neighbor in “Maude.” Bain has now died. He was 89.

WAKEUP SHOW “IDOL CHATTER”: THE NYC AUDITIONS

JASON: Hey Idol fans!  This season we’ll be recapping “American Idol” on The Wakeup Show AND here on panhandlepost.com–updates will be under the KCOW tab.  Here’s a recap of the season premiere:

NEW YORK (AP) – The Big Apple sends 41 hopefuls to Hollywood. “American Idol” began its 12th season last night with two hours of auditions in New York City. Frankie Ford from Brooklyn makes it. He’s a professional singer — of sorts. He sings in the New York subways and passes the hat. But James Bae (BAY) from Long Island doesn’t make the cut. He’s not William Hung bad — but he’s close. The 15-year-old James told new judge Nicki Minaj he’s single. While James didn’t get a golden ticket to Hollywood, he did a get a peck on the cheek from Minaj. Tonight, the Idol auditions move to Chicago.

JASON: One thing that really bothered me last night…the contestant who received her audition entry via a surprise pop-in by Randy at a club where she was performing.  If you’re gonna go to all the trouble of hand-picking her to audition, you’d think they could have let her try a song without the guitar!  She obviously was nervous but I think if she had had time to settle down, she could have done a better vocal and snagged the golden ticket.  Leave your thoughts on this (and anything else from last night) in the comments!

I’ll have all my thoughts on the NYC auditions on KCOW at 8:45 this morning.  And my “Idol Chatter” cohost Jennifer Schmid will be sharing her thoughts on the air and online in the next few weeks.

HEY…’MEMBER MYSPACE? NO? JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE IS WORKING ON THAT

The newly designed MySpace.

NEW YORK (AP) – Social network Myspace got a makeover and Internet users got their first look yesterday. The new site launched with the help of Justin Timberlake, who contributed his new single “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z to the homepage.

Timberlake, along with a group of other investors, also contributed financial backing. They bought MySpace last summer for $35 million, hoping to re-invent the entertainment-focused site.

TONIGHT ON TV: NEW JUDGES, SAME ‘IDOL’

(AP) – The disbelieving looks on the judges’ faces can mean only one thing: It’s the start of auditions on “American Idol.” Tonight’s singers are from the Chicago tryouts. As usual, many of them are ear-splitting, but there are some good ones sprinkled in. Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban are hearing this year’s versions of William Hung for the first time. This is the 12th season Randy Jackson has suffered through the early auditions.

Nicki Minaj used to think it was “so stupid” when she’d see Jennifer Lopez and other judges cry on “American Idol.” She says she thought they should “get a life.” But now that she’s cried as a judge, Minaj says she takes it all back. She says “When you’re looking into someone’s eyes and they gave their all and you know their journey ends here, it’s a tough pill to swallow.” Producers are hoping Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban will help the show bounce back from their lowest-rated season since 2002. They’re being paid $36 million dollars to deliver. If they don’t, they could end up like Britney Spears, who was paid a reported $15 million to goose the ratings of “The X Factor,” which went down instead. She was bounced after just one season.

COLTON DIXON: IDOL IS “INSANE”

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) – Colton Dixon says the new crop of contestants on “American Idol” have no idea what they’re getting into.

Dixon says viewers never see how much work it takes to compete on the show. He says he put in “two or three years’ amount of work in two or three months.” Dixon says a typical day lasts 12-to-14 hours, “every day, non-stop.” He says “you barely have enough time to sleep let alone eat.” Dixon says “it’s just insane.”

Season 12 starts tomorrow.
