WNCC MEN DOWN MILES COMMUNITY COLLEGE, 68-59

POWELL,, Wyo. — Western Nebraska Community College’s Cody Johnson put up another double-double performance as the Cougar men’s basketball team captured their sixth win of the season with a 68-59 win over Miles Community College on Friday at the Northwest Wyoming Classic.

Johnson finished the contest with 16 points and 12 rebounds and it was his second straight double-double contest after scoring 25 points and pulling down 18 rebounds a week ago in an overtime win against Northwest Kansas Technical College.

WNCC also received a couple other outstanding performances. Willie Mangum finished with 14 points, six assists, and four rebounds, while Charles Ward had 12 points and five rebounds.

The Cougars ran out to a 41-27 lead at halftime.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said the big key was his squad out-rebounded Miles 41-27.

Still, Beck said, his team needs to be ready to play Saturday night when they face the host squad Northwest Wyoming. The Trappers opened their home tournament with a 95-29 win over Aaniiih Nakoda College.

“We got the win,” Beck said. “Now we need to refocus and get this win tomorrow.”

After Saturday’s contest, WNCC, 6-5, will be back in action Jan. 7 when they travel to face Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, Kan., before opening up sub-region play Jan. 7 at Lamar Community College.
