Underage Driver Strikes Panhandle Apartment

According to Robert Straub of the Scottsbluff Police Department, “At 4:43pm on 05/30/17 Scottsbluff Police Officers along with Scottsbluff Fire were dispatched to the apartment complex located in the 500 block of West 40th street regarding a vehicle vs. apartment accident. Investigation revealed that 29 year old Matthew Gonzales was operating a 2004 Dodge Durango with a 13 year old on his lap attempting to teach her how to drive. Apparently Gonzales allowed the teen to operate the gas pedal and in doing so the vehicle accelerated and left the roadway. The vehicle struck an occupied portion of the apartment located at 567 W40th. The 2 occupants of the residence were in the house at the time the vehicle penetrated the exterior wall and received minor injuries from flying debris. Estimated damage to the building was $25000 and the Dodge Durango also sustained damage estimated to be $3000. Matthew Gonzales was issued a citation for Reckless driving, neither he or the two 13 year olds in the vehicle were injured.”
