Top honors this year in the annual World Championship Buffalo Chip Toss, held Saturday in Chadron, belong a Texan. 41-year old Derek Noe of Harlingen took the crown during the town’s 38th annual Fur Trade Days celebration.
Noe threw a piece of dried buffalo dung 125-1 to beat 47-year old Tim Dillow of Effingham, Ill, by nearly 10-feet win the Male 18-and-older category with the day’s longest throw.
Noe’s toss was well short of well short of the individual competition record of 186-7, set by Gary Lackey of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, in 2000. The overall record is 204-feet, thrown by Chadron State College track All-American Kail Bowman in 1990 during a since-discontinued team event.
Claiming the Female 18-plus crown was 23-year old Ashley Riesen of Chadron, who completed an award-winning track and field career at Chadron State College this spring by qualifying for the NCAA Division II outdoor nationals. Reisen’s throw was 88-9.
13-year old Kieren Baker of Seward, Ne, won the Boys 13-17 category with the day’s second-longest throw of 118-2. His 15-year old sister, Delaney, defended her title from last year in Females 13-17 at 83-5..
9-year old Bailee Ritterbush of Grand Junction, Colo, claimed Female 7-12 honors with a 75-11 throw. Her parents were both athletes at CSC with her father Mark the 1994 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor shotput champion.
12-year old Carter Bucheit of Hemingforford was this year’s Male 7-12 champion with a throw of 85-2-1/2 while the Boys and Girls 6-and-under winner 6-year old Barron Roth of Milford, NE, at an even 29-feet.
