The Chadron State College football team will wrap up spring practice by playing its spring game on the Elliott Field turf Saturday. The Eagles will take the field at 10 a.m. and begin playing about 10:30, head coach Jay Long said.
The Eagles’ spring games in recent years have not been knock-down, drag out affairs. There have been no kickoff or punt returns, and some of the established starters have not played or seen only limited action. But it’s a chance for younger players to showcase their talents while trying to land a spot on the varsity for this fall.
Long said that during the early portion of the spring, the defense was well ahead of the offense when they locked up in contact. However, he said as the young quarterbacks improved and the offense has played together more it began making plays that narrowed the gap.
Long added that numerous younger players have been demonstrating they will be ready contribute next season.
“We just have to keep them growing,” he said.
He also said because of the progress made by players who will be sophomores and redshirt freshmen, the Eagles should have more depth this fall.
“We seem to be two-deep at most of the positions,” Long noted.
