A Scottsbluff man was killed by lightning strike Saturday at Rocky Mountain National Park, the second person to died from lightning in two days in the park.

Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says 52-year old Gregory Cardwell was hit directly by the lightning about 3:30 pm near Rainbow Curve, a spot at 10,829-feet elevation along Trail Ridge Road… the nation’s highest continuously paved road.

Cardwell, a one-time resident of Chadron, was one of 13 people injured by the strike and taken to Estes Park Medical Center. Doctors at the hospital told KUSA-TV in Denver that rangers and first responders administered CPR on Cardwell, who was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.

Officials have not released the names, towns, and conditions of the other 12 hikers hurt in the lightning strike, but all had been released by Saturday evening.

Patterson says the lightning strike was in the same general area as one about 24 hours earlier that killed 42-year old Rebecca Teilhet of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Patterson says an air ambulance was able to land between bouts of severe weather and take the 3 to the Estes Park hospital, where Teilhet was pronounced dead.

Five members of a local hiking group were also headed back to the trailhead when the strike hit. They suffered various injuries, but were able to take themselves to the hospital. Two of the 8 were still hospitalized Saturday night.

The deaths of Cardwll and Teihlet were the first in Rocky Mountain National Park in 14 years. Previously, the last lightning fatality was a technical climber whowas struck on Longs Peak in 2000.
