LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Sammy Kershaw’s spices accidentally set a fire at his house in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Thursday.

Kershaw says he had left his house and remembered he was supposed to bring some of his Sammy Kershaw Cajun Spices to a friend, so he returned to the house. He grabbed three cans and apparently the box that held the spices fell onto the stove and caught two knobs that ignited the burners.

Kershaw says there were papers on the countertops near the stove. His alarm company alerted him just minutes after he left the second time, so he went back and smothered most of the fire with towels and blue jeans before letting fire fighters deal with the rest.

Kershaw says no one was home and there’s no structural damage but a lot of smoke damage. All his music memorabilia and masters are safe. Kershaw says he was lucky because he just installed that alarm system and the fire department is just a few yards away.
