Former Chadron State College Sports Information Director Con Marshall goes into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame this Friday (July 11) in ceremonies at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Marshall, who served as Chadron State’s director of information services and sports information for more than three decades, will be joined by 6 other individuals and one team in making up the 12th class of the RMAC Hall of Fame.
Although the Chadron native stepped down as a full-time employee at CSC in 2007, Marshall has continued to write stories on a wide range of subjects for both the college and the Chadron Record…continuing to earn his reputation as one of the top historians of northwest Nebraska.
He has produced volumes of news stories and photographs while also frequently serving as a resource for anyone looking for information about Chadron State, its athletic programs and the history of the surrounding region. In the late 1990s, Chadron State named the pressbox at Elliott Field – Don Beebe Stadium in his honor.
Marshall was recognized many times by CoSIDA… the College Sports Information Directors of America…for his writing, photographs, and publications efforts but he’s also received distinguished service awards from the Nebraska Athletic Directors, Nebraska Coaches Association, Chadron Chamber of Commerce and the Chadron Youth Baseball Program. In 2004, he was presented the first Chadron Basketball Tradition Award.
Perhaps one of Marshall’s biggest honors came in late September 2008 when he was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame as a contributor. Later that year he was inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1986, Marshall authored and compiled “The History of Chadron State College,” a 232-page publication to commemorate the college’s 75th anniversary. He followed that with a book to mark the college’s centennial in 2011, “Chadron State College: A Century of Service.”
Marshall’s knowledge of northwest Nebraska goes far beyond sports. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Chadron State in 1963 he worked three years each as a sports and news reporter at the Chadron Record and farm and feature reporter for the Scottsbluff Star-Herald.
He returned to Chadron in 1969 to become Chadron State’s first full-time director of information. He left Chadron State in the 1970s to become editor of the Sidney Telegraph for a year and was editor of the Chadron Record for 16 months before returning to his alma mater.
In addition to his journalistic endeavors, he is active in the Chadron Christian Church, Gideons, and Kiwanis while still reporting on many community events.
His wife, Peggy, was a long time faculty member in the Education department at CSC, helping prepare elementary education teachers before her retirement in 2011. They have three adult children Tyler, Sara and Perry who between them have given the couple 7 grandchildren.
The RMAC recognizes the top SID in the league each year with the J-W Campbell/Con Marshall Award, named after Marshall and his late colleague and fellow RMAC Hall of Famer J-W Campbell of Western State. His successor as SID at Chadron State, Alex Helmbrecht, will be honored with the award Friday night at the same banquet that includes the Hall of Fame induction.
The 2014 RMAC Hall of Fame class was chosen by a committee comprised of Helmbrecht, Patti Arnold of the Grand Junction Sentinel, Eric Danner of the RMAC, Marv Kay of Colorado School of Mines, Todd Kelly of CSU-Pueblo, Joan McDermott of Metro State, Sarah Meier of Fort Lewis, and Larry Mortensen of Adams State.
The others entering the Hall of Fame are Colorado Mesa soccer player Cheryl Bates-Olson, Adams State cross country and track and field athletes Zoila Gomez and Rick Robirds, former Colorado State coach and administrator Harry Hughes, Nebraska-Kearney men’s basketball player Eric Strand, Western State football player Charlie Thompson, and the 1989 Adams State women’s cross country team.
