The Fort Robinson Post Playhouse opens its 47th season in just over two weeks, but Artistic Director Tom Ossowski is still looking to fill his cast for one of the 5 shows…Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.

Ossowski chose his core ensemble for the season earlier this spring at auditions on the East Coast, but will use area performers for 3 nuns and the 6 youngest Von Trapp children.

He will cast those 9 parts from open auditions for those this Saturday and Sunday at the theater on the Fort Robinson grounds.

Ossowski wants the auditions to be “fun and relaxed,” so hopeful actors will just need to show up and work with him in learning a song from the show and possibly read a few lines from the script.

While the characters of the 6 younger Von Trapp children…the role of Liesl, the eldest, will be played by one of the core ensemble members…have specific ages in the show, Ossowski says it’s more important for the young actors to look the age of a specific role than to actually be that age.

As for the 3 nuns, he says they can be anywhere in age from mid-20s to senior citizens, but will be featured in songs with complex musical harmonies requiring some musical background.

A parent or guardian should accompany their child or children to the audition, but Ossowski is encouraging musical mothers to audition as well.

The Fort Robinson Post Playhouse production of The Sound of Music runs June 13 through August 9th, but the cast will have a relatively busy rehearsal schedule for the 3 weeks or so before opening night.

The other shows in the 2014 season are Guys and Dolls, School House Rock Live!, 9-to-5, and My Way, a tribute to Frank Sinatra that opens the season on Friday May 23.
