Oglala Sioux Tribal President Bryan Brewer will have hip replacement surgery this week. Tribal officials say the operation is scheduled Wednesday afternoon at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Brewer broke his hip and pelvis in a one-vehicle accident on December 29 and his doctors have been waiting for the bones in his pelvis to heal before going ahead with the hip replacement. He has been in a wheelchair since the crash.

Officials say Brewer, a career educator and coach whose first venture in politics was his election as OST president last November, should be hospitalized for at least 3 days after the replacement surgery, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
