Approximately 300 wrestlers from about 45 high schools from six states have pre-registered for the Chadron State College Wrestling Camp this coming week and will learn from an Olympic champion.
Brandon Slay will be the guest coach and clinician. The 167-pound gold medalist at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000 will speak at 7 p.m. Monday in the Chicoine Center. The event is being sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and will be open to the public.
CSC coach Brett Hunter said it is a distinct privilege to have someone of Slay’s caliber come to the college and help with the camp.
Slay won three Texas state championships in high school before competing four years at the University of Pennsylvania. He was the national tournament runner-up in 1997 and 1998, and is a two-time NCAA All-American. In pool play at the Olympics, Slay defeated nine-time world gold medalist and three-time Olympic gold medalist Buvaisar Saitiev of Russia for his championship.
Slay, who will conduct technique sessions at the CSC camp, is the assistant national freestyle wrestling coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Wrestlers and their coaches from as far away as California and Idaho will participate in the camp, Hunter said. While some of the schools are bringing only a portion of their squads, Plattsmouth, Neb., and Mesa Ridge High in Colorado Springs have pre-registered more than 20 wrestlers.
Check-in will begin at noon Sunday, and the camp will continue through Wednesday noon. All the wrestling activities will be in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
