NIRVANA, KISS, OTHERS INDUCTED INTO ROCK HALL

NEW YORK (AP) — The bass player for Nirvana says whenever fans of the band thank him for the group’s music, he thinks of Kurt Cobain. Krist Novoselic joined surviving Nirvana member Dave Grohl in New York as the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also joining them on stage was Courtney Love, Cobain’s widow. She hugged Grohl and Novoselic — and said she wishes “Kurt was here to do this.” Nirvana’s induction comes just over 20 years after Cobain’s suicide. Kiss attended the ceremony — but didn’t perform as part of a dispute over the number of members who were inducted. In comments at their induction, Peter Gabriel urged young musicians to be imaginative. One inductee, Linda Ronstadt didn’t attend. She has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — and rarely travels.

AEROSMITH TO DO REMIX OF “DREAM ON” TO HONOR BOSTON MARATHON VICTIMS

BOSTON (AP) — You have probably heard the Aerosmith song “Dream On” before. But it’s getting a makeover to honor victims of last year’s Boston Marathon bombings. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have laid down a new arrangement of the song — joined by a children’s chorus. Aerosmith has Boston roots — and the group performed their signature hit at the Boston Strong benefit concert last May. The new version of the song will air tomorrow on an ESPN special that deals with the attack, which killed three people.

”AMERICAN IDOL” ELIMINATES MALAYA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Malaya Watson is the latest contestant to leave “American Idol.” The judges used their save on Sam Woolf last week, so it’s the end of the road for her. She sang “I Am Changing” as her farewell song and she was emotional all the way through it. Ryan Seacrest asked her if they were still going out for Italian for dinner and she said yes. CJ Harris was the other person in the bottom two.

CALEB JOHNSON AND DEXTER ROBERTS WERE SICK ON “AMERICAN IDOL”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — If Caleb Johnson and Dexter Roberts didn’t sound their best on “American Idol,” blame it on illness. People magazine reports they were both almost unable to perform on Wednesday’s show because they were too sick. Johnson says his voice went out completely in rehearsal. He says he had “so much crud” in his throat from bronchitis and the band had to lower the key of “Faithfully” so he could get through it. Roberts says he’s glad “Idol” didn’t show all of his rehearsal, because his voice cracked as he warmed up. He says the doctor had “the magic touch” and if he wonders if he would have had to lip-synch to his iTunes track if he had not recovered enough.

LORDE “SUPER SURPRISED” AT BILLBOARD AWARD NOMINATIONS

MEXICO CITY (AP) — When you consider that her song “Royals” has become a big hit, you may not be surprised that Lorde (LORD) is getting a bunch of awards nominations. But she says she is. She says every time she wins an award she is “super surprised” — because she can “kind of forget that anyone listens” to her music. The New Zealand teen is one of the most nominated artists for the Billboard Music Awards next month — with 12. She says being up for that many is “incredible” and “an honor.” She spoke yesterday in Mexico City, where she did a concert Wednesday.

BILLY JOEL SURPRISES KIDS AT SCHOOL CONCERT

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (AP) — He has been artist-in-residence at Madison Square Garden for a while now. But it was Billy Joel’s appearance at an elementary school on New York’s Long Island that really impressed a group of children the other day. He showed up at the spring concert at Deasy Elementary School in Glen Cove. The principal says he invited Joel — who lives nearby — on a lark, but didn’t expect him to show up. But he did — and got to hear the kids perform 15 of his songs as part of the show, titled “The River of Dreams: A Billy Joel Tribute.”

ZOOEY DESCHANEL CAN’T CALL PRINCE HER FRIEND

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Zooey Deschanel put out a single with Prince, but she’d hardly call them friends. Deschanel says Prince is so beyond her and “very mysterious,” but “incredibly nice and so generous.” She says making a single with Prince was almost an accident. She says the producers of her show “New Girl” wanted her character to sing with Prince, so she did a vocal for the sound department. They sent it to Prince and then mixed that vocal, and then she had a single with Prince. Deschanel says it’s “so exciting.”

MACKLEMORE TAKES PART IN ANTI-BULLYING PSA

SEATTLE (AP) — A group of students helping make an anti-bullying video at Safeco Field in Seattle yesterday got a surprise. They thought they were were going to do the public service announcement with the mascot for the Mariners. But instead were joined by rap star Macklemore. He joined students at Highland Middle School in nearby Bellevue at home plate for the taping. The anti-bullying message will be available for radio and television use.
