More Than Just a Birthday Party, This Founders Day Celebration Kicks Off the National Park Service Centennial Celebration in 2016

Harrison, NE:  Friday, August 21, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., starts a weekend of fun at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument with “Wanna See Cool Stuff” featuring items from the archives pertaining to national parks.  On Saturday, August 22, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. there will be a Ranger on the Hills, Ranger Talks and Kids Activities. The “Niobrara Meanderings” talk on Sunday the 23 at 2 p.m. is entitled “Agate—Before it Became a National Monument.”   This celebration commemorates Founder’s Day, the 99
th birthday of the National Park System and gives a look forward to the National Park Service Centennial.

 

On Friday, August 21, Museum Curator Maryann Neubert and Museum Technician Chris Mather will be taking items from the vault and allowing visitors the opportunity to see things that they normally wouldn’t be able to see when they visit the monument.  Several items have ties to the National Park Service and they will be showcasing these. Neubert also demonstrates the art of spinning yarn and lets visitors try their hand at spinning.

 

On Saturday, August 22, from 9 a.m. until noon, Ranger Caleb Prater will be on the Fossil Hills to explain the excavations, history and behind the scenes stories of one of the greatest Miocene mammal fossil finds in the world.  During the day there will be ranger-led kids activities including Find Ranger Anne Scavenger Hunt, Pin the Tail on the Moropus, and Fossil Joust.
