SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A bagpipe processional closed out the funeral service for former U.S. Sen. George McGovern, who was remembered by hundreds of mourners during the two-hour ceremony.
McGovern died Sunday at age 90. He was recalled fondly Friday in speeches by former U.S. Sens. Tom Daschle and Gary Hart.
Hart called McGovern “a voice of conscience for our nation in our time.”
Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern, who is not related to George McGovern, also spoke about the love McGovern had for his country.
The funeral for the three-time presidential candidate brought out politicians from both sides of the aisle.
Friday’s service capped two days of remembrances for the South Dakota native. Vice President Joe Biden spoke at a Thursday prayer service.
McGovern will be buried in a private ceremony in Washington.
