The second round of competition is over at the 2013 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper and the first of the 4 evening sessions making up the third round is also in the books.
The top 12 competitors in each event at the end of three rounds of competition will advance to Saturday’s finals or short go-round, and all 3 of the Chadron State College competitors were in the top 12 after 2 rounds…but not after last night’s 3rd round action.
Senior Mitch McAdow was 4th in tie-down roping going into the evening after finishing 9th in the 1st round and 10th in the 2nd with a combined 19.7, but posted a no-score in the 3rd round…almost certainly keeping him out of the finals.
In goat-tying, junior Shelby Winchell is tied for 3rd with senior Amy Tierney 7th. Winchell, tied for 1st after the first round, tied for 15th in the 2nd while tied for 11th.
Tierney, who has a combined time of 13.1, has her third go-round Thursday night while Winchell, at 12.9, goes Friday night. Winchell is also in breakaway roping, but was one of 15 cowgirls in the event not to score in the first two rounds…a string she will try to break Thursday night.
David Hinman of Hay Springs and Northeast Junior College had a tough 2nd round. Tied for 1st after the opening round, he had the 2nd-slowest time of the day to place 30th and slip to 14th overall at 15.9. Hinman’s 3rd round is Friday night.
Eastern Wyoming’s two team roping duos had great second rounds and sit in the Top 5. Derek Weinreis and Levi O’Keeffe were 3rd today and sit 2nd after 2 rounds at 13.5 while Troy Wilcox and Cotey Hanson are 4th at 16.1 after placing 5th. Hanson and Wilcox have their 3rd round tomorrow while O’Keeffe and Weinreis go again Friday.
Wilcox is also in tie-down roping and steer wrestling…and was 18th in both 2 rounds. He finished in tie-down last night with a no-score and has his final round in steer wrestling on Thursday. EWC’s Dustin Daily has failed to scores in either rounds of tie-down roping. His last round is Friday.
Joey Painter of Black Hills State…the defending breakaway roping champion who also qualified this year in goat-tying…continued to struggle in the 2nd round of both.
Painter again had no score in breakaway roping and had the 2nd-slowest time in goat-tying after being one of just 2 cowgirls not score in the first round. Her final rounds are Thursday in breakaway and Friday in goats.
BHSU freshman teammates Hallie Fulton and Billie Miller sit 15th and 37th, respectively, in goat-tying. Both have their 3rd rounds on Friday. Lindsey Goulet is 40th in barrel racing with her 3rd round Thursday, and Wyatt Treeby is 20th in tie-down roping and goes again Friday.
BHSU steer wrestler Sam Olson has completed his 3 rounds. He had a no-score in the first go-round, was 5th in the 2nd go-round yesterday during slack, and placed 6th last night’s 12 man group with the 6 behind him having no score
Chandler Markel of Scottsbluff and the University of Wyoming was 12th on the day in barrel racing with a time of 14.25, but is 32nd overall at 29.64. She finishes up Thursday.
