Many people mapped, or attempted to map, the West in the nineteenth century; from fur trappers to Army Corps of Engineers cartographers. Discover the early map makers with Brian Croft of Western Nebraska Community College as he presents “Changing Notions of Nebraska:  Cartography, 1820-1910” on Saturday, August 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the visitor center. He will examine how our area was seen between the times of Stephen Long, who explored the Platte River in 1820, and the turn of the century. He will combine interpretations of original period maps with a discussion of the changing attitudes toward the region.

The Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The summit road remains open from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.  All Monument trails are open from sunrise until sunset.
