RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Rapid City man convicted of stabbing one homeless man and cutting another when he couldn’t get a cigarette has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
KOTA and KEVN report that Judge Janine Kern sentenced 23-year-old Nico Steele Monday afternoon on three counts of aggravated assault and one count of possessing methamphetamine.
Authorities say Steele stabbed a man in the leg outside the downtown Rapid City VFW last August when he asked the man for a cigarette and he said no. Another man was cut on his back when he tried to intervene.
Steele ran away after the incident but was caught by police. Police say Steele also threatened someone else during the attack.
Prosecutors say Steele has had 10 arrests since turning 18 years old.
