Legion Baseball Notebook: Alliance Spartans go 2-2 in Omaha

Alliance 5, Omaha Northwest 4  (Friday, May 31)

  • Spartans score three run s in the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead but see Northwest tie the game at four with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
  • JJ Garza singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, which held up for the final score.
  • Northwest’s late comeback attempt started with a pair of runs scored without the benefit of a hit: two passed balls in the bottom of the fifth with two outs.
  • JJ Garza started the game on the mound and went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on one hit.  He struck out three and walked three while getting the victory.
  • Peyton Pinedo and Chase King finished the game in relief with King picking up the save.

Alliance 9, Bryan 2  (Saturday, June 1)

  • A second straight day with early offense propelled Alliance to the win, scoring seven times over the second and third innings to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Ezra Ray doubled home the first two runs followed by Peyton Pinedo scoring on a fielder’s choice.  Leading 3-0, Caeson Clarke doubled two more in for a 5-0 lead in the third.  Ray lifted an RBI single and the seventh run scored on an RBI ground out for the 7-0 lead.
  • Bryan’s only runs came on back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning but were held to just one hit the rest of the game.
  • Collin Schrawyer pitched the complete game victory giving up just two runs and four hits while striking out four and walking only one.
  • Alliance racked up a dozen hits and struckout just two times.

Bennington 2, Alliance 0 (Saturday, June 1)

  • Alliance suffered its first loss of the weekend, getting one-hit by Bennington in a game that was scoreless until the fifth inning.
  • Bennington started the fifth with a single and following a pop out and error, Rylan Wallingford lifted an RBI sac  fly to right field for a 1-0 lead.
  • Bennington would add another run in the seventh playing small-ball with an inning-opening walk, passed ball and sacrifice bunt that allowed a run to score on a second passed ball.
  • Alliance brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh following a walk but Colton Smith notched his sixth strikeout to end the game.
  • Smith allowed just one hit and walked only two for the victory while Peyton Pinedo started for Alliance and went six innings giving up five hits and one run with three strikeouts.
  • Trevor DuBray pitched the seventh and allowed a run and a walk.

Omaha South 2, Alliance 1 (Sunday, June 2)

  • A close game saw Alliance tie it at one in the sixth inning only to see Omaha South take the run back in the bottom half and win 2-1.
  • The teams combined for a total of nine hits. JJ Garza was 2-3 for Alliance.
  • Trevor DuBray threw a complete game effort and struck out ten South batters while walking just two.
  • South broke through fora 1-0 lead on Pespoyansky’s two-out RBI single in the fourth and countered the Alliance run with what turned out to be the game winner in the sixth on an RBI single by the pitcher Rhoten.  Gomez drove in Alliance’s run with a single in the sixth.
