It turns out the Chadron State softball team did not sweep its games with Black Hills State University in a weekend Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series with the Yellow Jackets and New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, NM.
Through a posting error, the Eagles’ Saturday game was listed on the Chadron Eagles and RMAC websites as an 8-4 win when it was actually a 3-2 loss.
Both teams scored in the 1st innng…BHSU on a passed ball and the Eagles on an rbi single by Katie Londo, but CSC saw the potential for a big inning snuffed when Nikki Ritzen was thrown out at home trying to score from 3rd on a fly out to centerfield.
Both teams scored again, the Yellow Jackets on 3 straight singles and CSC without the benefit of a hit as Ritzen walked, stole 2nd, and came around to score on an error by the catcher.
BHSU got the winning run in the next inning on a solo homer by Ryan Cook. The Eagles threatened in the 5th with 2 runners on, but Londo grounded into a double play.
They also put a runner on in the bottom of the 7th on a hit batter, but Yellow Jackets pitcher Kaitlyn Farr struck out the next 2 batters to end the game.
Farr held the Eagles to just 4 hits and 2 runs…1 unearned…while striking out 5 and walking 4 to improve to 2-5. CSC’s Aryn Grywusiewicz took another tough loss, spreading 7 hits and striking out 3 while walking only 1, but fell to 4-10 with her 3rd straight loss decided by a home run.
With their 11-0 win over Black Hills on Friday and their pair of losses to New Mexico Highlands 3-2 and 7-3, the Eagles are 10-16 overall and 8-11 in the RMAC.
That’s good for 8th place. New Mexico Highlands is 9th and Metro State 10th even though Metro is just 2 games back and NMHU is 2-1/2 back. That’s because the Cowgirls have a better winning percentage because their record includes a tie. CSC is 1-1/2 games behind 7th place Western New Mexico
Metro State and Fort Lewis come to Chadron next Saturday and Sunday for another pod series. CSC will play the Roadrunners Saturday at 10:00, Metro and Fort Lewis meet at noon, and the Eagles wrap up the day against Fort Lewis. Games times will be the same the next day, but with CSC taking on Fort Lewis first.
