LAURYN HILL IS HEADED FOR PRISON

Lauryn HillNEWARK, New Jersey (AP) — You know her as a Grammy-winning singer. But Lauryn Hill compares her time in the music industry to being a slave — during which time she had “an economic system imposed” on her.

That view will cause her to literally lose her freedom for a while. She will have to serve three months in prison because she failed to pay about $1 million in taxes over the past decade. Hill was sentenced at a court in Newark, New Jersey yesterday — her punishment for a guilty plea to charges of failing to pay taxes on nearly $2 million earned between 2005 and 2007.

The sentence also takes into account unpaid state and federal taxes in 2008 and 2009 that brought the total earnings to about $2.3 million. Hill paid more than $900,000 in taxes in the past several days — but the Feds say she still owes interest and penalties.

Hill is to report to prison by July 8. It’s unclear where she will serve her sentence.
