(Rapid City, SD) – In a battle of undefeated top 10 ranked girls basketball teams from different states, St. Thomas More of Rapid City handed the Chadron High girls a 64-43 loss Friday night.
More, the defending South Dakota Class A state champion and ranked 6th this year, outscored the 2nd-ranked Lady Cardinals, 42-22, in the second half to avenge one of its two losses last season.
It was close in the first half, with More leading 10-8 after the first period and 22-21 at the half, but the Lady Cavaliers dominated the game after intermission. They outscored Chadron 21-8 in the third quarter and 21-14 in the fourth.
5-11 sophomore guard Alexys Swedlund led St. Thomas More with 31 points, while junior Peyton Hinn topped Chadron with 15, the only Cardinal in double digits.
The loss ended Chadron’s 29-game regular-season winning streak. Last year, they were unbeaten until losing in both the district finals. The Lady Cards also lost two out of three games at state.
With this loss, Chadron falls to 8-1 as they prepare to host the Chadron Rotary boys and girls tournament this Friday and Saturday at Chadron State College. Also taking part in the tournament will be Hemingford, Bayard, and Valentine.
The Lady Cardinals also have a rematch with St. Thomas More in Chadron on February 1st.
