KAB BLACK OPS was conceived by Environmental Resources Coordinator, Rita Campos, and developed and executed by Environmental Education Specialist, Melissa Cordell.
The City of Alliance has been a partner with Keep Alliance Beautiful since KAB’s conception in 1982. The City of Alliance continues to move forward with environmental issues such as waste reduction, public education, litter prevention and beautification. These efforts were recognized by Keep Nebraska Beautiful with the City of Alliance receiving the First Place Deanie Anderson Outstanding Community Environmental Award in the Population 2501-10,000 Division.
Larry Heinrich was present to accept the award on behalf of the City of Alliance.
Keep Alliance Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) was also awarded a grant in the amount of $4,500 from the Product Stewardship Institute. The grant is to focus upon the completion of community outreach through education promoting the use of manufacturer take back and mail back programs. The goal of this project is to increase the recycling of electronics, rechargeable batteries, mercury thermostats and fluorescent bulbs in rural communities of 2,500 residents or fewer.
The Product Stewardship Institute is a “national non-profit membership-based organization located in Boston, Massachusetts. PSI works with state and local government agencies to partner with manufacturers, retailers, environmental groups, federal agencies, and other key stakeholders to reduce the
health and environmental impacts of consumer products. Product Stewardship is the act of minimizing health, safety, environmental and social impacts, and maximizing economic benefits of a product and its packaging throughout all lifecycle stages.”
The implementation and education of this program will begin immediately in Box Butte County focusing primarily upon Hemingford. The completion of this program’s deadline is September 30, 2013.
Alliance Beautiful will be investigating venues for these programs, as well as creating appropriate educational materials suitable to our local communities.
