It took jurors in Rapid City only about 2 hours on Tuesday to convict a Hot Springs man of killing his mother and hiding her body three years ago.
28-year-old Matthew Tornquist was found guilty of 1st-degree murder and grand theft in the weeklong trial. The murder count carries a mandatory life sentence and while grand theft has a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison. No sentencing date has been set.
56-year-old Catherine Tornquist disappeared from her Hot Springs home in October 2011 after taking out $10,000 from the bank to buy an RV.
Her body has not been found even after more than 50 searches, but South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley…who personally served as lead prosecutor…told KOTA-TV that the murder investigation was a “textbook” example of how an investigation should be conducted.
Jackley’s methodical case with dozens of witnesses used blood, DNA, and other forensic evidence to tie Matthew Tornquist to the apparent scene of his mother’s murder, the gun used to shoot her, and the $10,000…which has also never been found.
The prosecution’s case, which began last Tuesday and concluded late Monday afternoon, also included testimony from a former cellmate of Tornquist’s at the Fall River County jail who said Tornquist had talked about how he’d killed his mother and hid her body.
