John F. Currens, 81, died peacefully at Good Samaritan Care Center in Alliance April 24, 2014.

John was born in Glendive, Montana on June 20, 1932, to the late Forrest and L. Kathryn Currens.  John grew up and attended school in eastern Montana before graduation from Montana State College.  John married Mary Lou Kirchoff in 1959, and together they had four children.
After starting his career with John Deere Co, John spent many years in banking, working in agricultural lending.  John and family lived in Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota before moving to Gering, Nebraska in 1984.  John felt at home in western Nebraska as the area reminded him of his family home in eastern Montana.  In retirement, John enjoyed working the pilers during sugar beet harvest, offering him time visit with his friends farming in the valley.  He also enjoyed working for the handyman program, mowing lawns and developing new friends.
John is survived by son David (Susan) Currens of Paynesville, MN, son Michael (Jennifer) Currens of Eagan, MN, daughter Patti (Jeremy) Lyon of Thornton, CO;  6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; 2nd wife Marge Currens of Gering, NE.  John was preceded in death by wife Mary Lou, daughter Kathryn, and his sister Dana.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2014, in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with Pastor Ron Nuss-Warren officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard.   A reception will follow at First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff.
