Janelle Hansen of Hemingford was recognized during the 2015 Box Butte County Fair with the 2015 Good Neighbor Award.

The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation and the Omaha World-Herald annually recognize individuals or organizations who contribute community service and goodwill to fellow citizens in Nebraska.

Hansen received a certificate and gold insignia pin at the August 5th Fair Queen Contest. The award was presented by Ak-Sar-Ben Ambassadors Betty and Arlee Phillips.

“There is no way I can begin to list all of the ‘good deeds’ this kind, generous woman does for the children, the elderly, her neighbors, church, community and school,” said Bev Hanks, a friend and neighbor of Janelle Hansen and her family.

From mowing lawns and providing transportation for elderly residents of her town, to organizing community service and fundraising projects, Hansen’s generosity is always given with a caring smile, Hanks added.

Hansen also assists individuals facing serious health challenges by giving her time, resources, and advocacy including driving them to medical appointments. She shares garden space with others and “does most of the work,” and serves on several boards, committees and volunteer capacities in the town of 800.

“Janelle Hansen spontaneously helps whenever the opportunity arises,” Hanks says, adding that Hansen provided huge support and assistance when her husband, Don Hanks, died in 2014.

She was joined at the presentation by Mrs. Hanks, her parents, Al and Julie Visser of Sidney, and two of her three adult children, Blake and Emily.
