In college baseball, Nebraska scored 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning and bolted to a 9-1 lead, then held on to beat Creighton 12-9 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha on Tuesday evening.

The victory gives the Huskers a season split with the Jays, who beat them 5-3 on April 26.

Nebraska improves to 24-26 on the year with just 3 regular season games remaining. Creighton falls to 28-15, also with 3 regular season games left.

The Husker offense busted out of the gate with 5 hits in the top of the 1st…the most given up by Creighton to open a game since moving into TD Ameritrade, home of the College World Series… as all 9 starters went to the plate.

Rich Sanguinetti began it with a double…his 5th leadoff double of the season…and Nebraska proceeded to score on an error, a 2-RBI single by Austin Darby, a ground out, and an RBI single by Tanner Lubach.

Creighton got a run back in the 2nd on a bases-loaded walk, but Nebraska answered in the 3rd when Lubach got a 2-RBI single, then plated 2 more in the 5th on an error and sacrifice fly to go up 9-1.

The Bluejays then scored 7 runs over the next two innings. The first runs in the rally came on 2 more bases-loaded walks that were followed by a 2-run double, but senior Michael Blatchford…who picked up on RBI on one of the walks…was thrown out trying to score.

Creighton made it a 1-run game after 6 inning on a 2-run homer by Federico Castagnini, his first, but the Jays left the bases loaded for the second time when Husker coach Darin Erstad brought in closer Dylan Vogt and got a fly out to end the inning and keep the score 9-8.

Nebraska pushed the back to 3 at 11-8 in the top of the 7th on a double by Lubach…his 4th RBI of the night…and another sacrifice fly. Creighton got one of the runs back in the 8th on a 2-out error, but the Huskers matched that in the top of the 9th on a single by Jake Placzek.

Josh Roeder came on and retired the Jays in order to pick up his 4th save of the season. Roeder and Vogt gave up just 1 hit and no walks in the final 3-1/3 innings after the Huskers had yielded 11 walks and 7 hits in the first 5-2/3. Nebraska hitters pounded out 16 hits.

Nebraska wraps the regular season with a 3-game Big Ten series at home against the Michigan Wolverines, starting on Thursday and wrapping up on Saturday with Senior Day.  Creighton also closes out the regular season with a 3-game conference series at home that starts Thursday, but it’s Missouri State at the Missouri Valley Conference.
