Fire union leader gets probation for assaulting woman at bar

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The president of the Omaha firefighters union has been given six months of probation for assaulting a woman at a bar.

Douglas County Court records say 49-year-old Steve LeClair was sentenced Thursday. He’d pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct.

Police investigated after a woman accused LeClair of punching her in her back when she ignored his sexually charged comments and asked him to leave her alone. The woman, who is black, also says LeClair whispered the words “white power” in her ear before hitting her. LeClair denied her allegations, but his attorney has said LeClair elbowed the woman.

LeClair was fired from the fire department in February.
