Eagles Add Track-&-Field Talent Stretching From Canada to Texas

Several women who had excellent high school careers will be joining the Chadron State College track and field program when classes begin this month, coaches Brad Gamble and Brian Medigovich report.

The recruits come from five states and one Canadian province.

Gamble said the newcomers will give the Eagles added depth and several of them have marks that will make them conference contenders.

Alyse Henry of Rock Springs, Wyo., is expected to be the first of the recruits to see action. She will join the Eagles’ cross country team after finishing fourth in Class 4A in the Wyoming State Meet in 19 minutes, 13.57 seconds last fall. Henry also was second in the 800 meters at the state track meet in 2:21.89 and fifth in the 1600 in 5:23.68 this spring.

Medigovich said Henry has expressed an interest in running the steeplechase in college and noted that she has continued to improve during her high school career. Her state cross country time last fall was a minute faster than her mark as a junior.

Several of the newcomers are joining the Eagles after having outstanding success in the sprints and jumps. They include Madelyn Brashears of Fort Morgan, Colo., Faith Brown of Ontario, Canada, Shayla Dockweiler of Callaway, Neb., Sierra Martinez of Aztec, N.M., Kimberly Rendon of Pearsall, Texas, and Ashley Turner of Burns, Wyo.

Brashears had a season best of 19 feet, 4 inches in the long jump as a senior and placed second in the event in Class 4A at the Colorado State Meet this spring by going 18-4 .

Brown ran the 100 meters in 12.3 seconds, long jumped 17 feet and triple jumped 35 feet this spring while competing for St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Bramton, Ontario.

Dockweiler won the Class D high jump at the Nebraska State Meet this spring at 5-5, a mark she consistently cleared. She also was third in the long jump at state at 17- .

Martinez won the Class 5A long jump at the New Mexico State Meet this year with a leap of 18-6 , helping her Aztec team win the state championship. She also has run the 400 meters in 58.8 seconds.

Rendon had an outstanding senior season in Texas. She ran the 100 meters in 12.36 seconds and the 200 in 25.20. In addition, she triple jumped 36-3.

Competing in Class 2A, Turner placed second at the Wyoming State Meet in the 100 meters in Class 2A and was third in the 200 in 26.84.

Gamble said he expects Chasidy Horton of Fountain, Colo., to be a good addition for the Eagles, perhaps as a heptathlete. He said she had excellent marks in the sprints, high hurdles and long jump before she was sidelined by an injury this spring.
