The NCAA is making changes to women’s basketball games for the 2015-2016 season and the most noticeable difference to fans will be four 10-minute quarters replacing two 20-minute halves. Chadron State College Head Coach Tim Connealy told us he thinks the new rules could impact game flow.
Connealy says the change in time structure could lead to more offensive chances at the end of each quarter.
Other rules that the NCAA tweaked according to Alex Helmbrecht in the Chadron State Sports Information and College Relations Office:
- Teams reach a free-throw double-bonus on the fifth team foul of each quarter.
- Fouls will reset to zero at the start of each quarter.
- In the final minute of the fourth quarter or overtime teams can advance the ball to the front court after a timeout following a made basket.
- It may be a little more raucous in the crowds at women’s basketball games now too: the NCAA is allowing bands or “amplified music” to be played during any dead-ball situation, whereas it used to only be allowed during timeouts and intermission.
