The Chadron State softball team saw its losing streak reach 6 games with a 3-2 loss Friday morning to New Mexico Highlands, then snapped the skid with an 11-0 shutout of Black Hills State in the afternoon.
The three schools are playing each other this weekend in Las Vegas on NMHU’s homefield in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series. Each team is playing the other two in one game on both Friday and Saturday. NMHU beat BHSU 12-2 in the other game of the day.
CSC had plenty of opportunities in the game one loss to the Cowgirls, stranding 8 runners on base – half of them in scoring position.
NMHU got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo home run, but the Eagles answered an inning later with an RBI single by Nikki Ritzen.
The Cowgirls got what would prove to be the winning runs in the bottom of the 4th with another home run, this a 2-run shot. CSC cut the margin in half with sacrifice fly from Sarah Knudsen in the top of the 6th, but ended up stranding 2 runs in the inning and another in the 7th.
Aryn Grywusiewicz suffered the tough-luck loss, going the distance and scattering 6 hits but 2 of those hits were home runs…including a 2-run shot. It was her second straight loss where the only runs were scored on homers.
The BHSU game was a different story as the Eagles jumped on the Yellow Jackets early with 6 runs in the 1st inning and 4 more in the 4th.
In th big first inning, Katie Londo hit a 2-run home run and Sarah Knudsen added an RBI double…starting a day that saw her finish jut a home run shy of the cycle.
Nikki Ritzen, Breeze Phillips, and Ashlynn Marino also drove in runs for CSC in the inning while Rebecca Wetsch accounted for all the 4th inning runs with a grand slam.
In the NMHU-BHSU game, the home team scored 4 in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, and 3 in the 3rd en route to a 12-2 victory.
CSC is now 10-14 overall and 8-9 in the RMAC while NMHU improves to 12-21-1 overall and 5-15-1 in league play and BHSU slips to 2-12 in the RMAC and 3-20 overall.
CSC plays the Yellowjackets Saturday at noon and the Cowgirls at 2:00 with BHSU and NMHU meeting to start the day at 10:00 a-m.
