Veterans Affairs officials have once again removed two Confederate flags from an historical display at the VA Hot Springs Medical Center.
Black Hills VA Health Care System director Steve DiStasio had removed the flags last month after some veterans receiving treatment at the hospital had completed they were racist and offensive, but he then had them put back a few days later after concluding they had historical significance.
That angered still more veterans and led U-S Senator Tim Johnson to call for the removal of the flags. The issue was settled Wednesday when VA Midwest Health Care Network Director Janet Murphy ordered them removed for good.
Murphy said the action was being taken “to ensure the Hot Springs VA Medical Center is a place of healing for all veterans.” She also apologized to those who were offended by the display.
