Coach Stein Talks Eagle Quarterbacks as Football Camp Opens in Chadron

The Chadron State offense will have a new look at quarterback this season now that Jonn McLain has graduated after setting at least 13 school records over his illustrious career.

Offensive Coordinator Chris Stein spent Thursday morning practice working with the quad of players looking to replace McLain – redshirt freshman T.D. Stein, sophomores Justyn Curtis and Matt Vinson, and senior Chris Conroy.  After spring ball the competition narrowed to a pair, but Stein says on Day One everyone has a shot to prove themselves even though two have bumped up to the top of the list.

The decision won’t come after a practice or two, maybe not even after a week or two.  Stein says while coaches would like to have a decision made sooner rather than later, there is no rush to name a starter as camp breaks.

With three young competitors Stein wants to see how the group reacts to the stress and adversity of playing the position, and with Chadron State’s offense keying on timing and tempo that could be the deciding factor.

The quarterbacks worked as a group on several drills Thursday morning on the north practice field in black jerseys both handing the ball off and on pattern and timing drills.  They also got a chance to go up against the CSC defense in an energetic setting towards the end of the morning session.
