Keep Alliance Beautiful is still looking for a new location for its recycling center and City Manager J-D Cox says the city is doing all it can to help the group be successful.
The recycling program moved from its initial home to a leased building provided by the city at the Alliance landfill last October, but the new building couldn’t handle the volume from the popular program and KAB suspended it in January.
Cox says he, Mayor Ralph Yeager and City Councilwoman Pasha Korber Gonzalez, who was the recycling director for KAB from 2006-2010, have been meet with KAB Interim Executive Director Ian Devereaux, the group’s staff, and its board to identify ways to find a resolution to the disruption of recycling services and identify solutions to avoid a similar shutdown in the future.
Mayor Yeager says the city of Alliance has supported KAB’s recycling program since November 2008, with the city council unanimously voting to put $30,000 in this year’s budget for KAB as a commitment to annual funding to support the costs of the recycling program,
Deveraux says the KAB recycling program diverted 292 tons of recyclables from the landfill, saving the city money and helping it reach mandated reductions in landfill use.
Korber Gonzalez says “recycling is paramount in the future of not only our community, but the entire world,” adding that she’s “committed to seeing the ongoing success and growth of our recycling program with a continued partnership between KAB and the City of Alliance.”
The city and KAB are also looking at the possibility of expanding the recycling program with curbside pickup in Alliance if enough city residents will commit to participating. Korber Gonzalez says curbside pickup must have a high volume of recycled materials to offset the costs.
Cox and Korber Gonzalez says anyone having questions about the current state of recycling in Alliance or future growth plans can contact either of them or by email at [email protected] or [email protected]. Cox and other city representatives can be reached by phone at 762-5400.
