UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman has instituted spending cuts to cover a $4.65 million budget shortfall.
Perlman announced the cuts in a campus-wide email on Tuesday, saying the spring enrollment increases expected to alleviate the shortfall did not materialize.
The biggest share of the cuts…$3.2-million dollars…comes by increasing the UNL salary pool only 2% instead of the planned 3%. Several non-faculty positions will also be eliminated.
The deficit was the result of a $2.2 million shortfall carried over from last fiscal year…$800,000 from a reallocation of funds across the entire NU system…and $570,000 in new building maintenance and operation costs.
