Chadron will play for the American Legion baseball B-7 District Junior title Tuesday against a team that will be determined Monday evening.
The Chadron First National Bank of North Platte Nationals are the hosts and the lone unbeaten squad in the tournament whose winner advances to state.
Rain and a thunderstorm wiped out the first day schedule on Friday, but didn’t slow down Chadron. They won their opener 10-4 over Valentine on Saturday, then beat Ogallala 10-1 before edging the Alliance Spartans 8-7 Sunday afternoon in the championship semifinals.
Alliance took an early 1-0 lead, but Chadron countered for a 4-1 lead. Alliance came back to go on top 7-4, but Chadron rallied again to go up 8-7 after six innings. In the 7th, Alliance got the leadoff man to second base with no outs, but a sacrifice bunt was popped up and the runner was doubled off. A fly ball then ended the game.
Alliance, who beat Gering 10-2 and Sidney 3-2 in the first two rounds, plays for the other championship berth Monday at 5 pm in a rematch with Gering, who eliminated Sidney Sunday night 6-3 after earlier eliminating Valentine 9-5. The Alliance-Gering winner will have to beat Chadron twice on Tuesday to go to state.
