Chadron State Football Opponent 2-Minute Drill: Western State

Chadron State fall football camp opens tomorrow with player check-in and pictures, and we’re continuing our look forward at the RMAC teams on CSC’s schedule.  Today we’re checking in with Western State in our 2-minute drill series with quick facts about the match-up, last year’s game with CSC, and hearing thoughts from coaches and players.

Opponent: Western State
Game Day: Week 5– Saturday, October 3
Location: Gunnison, CO
Kickoff: 1:00

Last Year’s Record: 4-7
Last Year vs. CSC: Chadron State 40, Western State 7

It was a happy homecoming for the Eagles at Elliott Field in 2014 with a 40-7 win over the Mountaineers.  Following a Michael Madkins touchdown run in the first quarter, Randy Wentz opened the second with a 28-yard field goal, followed just a few minutes later by Robert Jackson’s nine-yard catch from Jonn McLain and by halftime it was 20-0 Chadron State.  Mountaineer sophomore running back Austin Ekeler took a one-yard plunge into the end zone early in the third to cut CSC’s lead to 13, but after a quick answer from McLain to Kyle Hooper for six, Madkins blitzed 48-yards down field for a 33-7 lead early in the fourth and CSC went on to the easy win.

2015 Mountaineer Sound Cuts

Head Coach Jas Baines, a former Chadron State defensive and special teams coach, is counting on a ton of returning experience and talent to lead the Mountaineer offense.

Baines says the offseason effort and leadership returning will be keys to a strong season.

Quarterback Brett Arrivey threw for over 2,400 yards last season and knows the offense well according to Baines.

Austin Ekeler will come into his junior season as one of the top running back threats in the RMAC.  After nearly 300 carries last year, he thinks the balance of Western’s offense will help him continue to produce and stay healthy.

Redshirt senior Gerald Coleman will be patrolling the defensive backfield and has experienced talent around him.
